NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (Reuters) - The tourist hotspot of Niagara Falls has gained a new photo-op for social distancing Canadian visitors on board ferries taking them into the mist of the falls: crowds of Americans.

Although cases of COVID-19 continue to rise across the United States, neighboring Canada has largely managed to contain the spread of the virus, helped by strict social distancing measures and mandatory masks in several jurisdictions. At the famous waterfalls on the U.S.-Canadian border, Canadian ferries are limited to just six passengers per boat, out of a 700 person capacity. But on the U.S. side, the ferries are operating at 50% capacity, according to Maid of the Mist boat tours.

"We actually took a picture of the (American) boat," said Julie Pronovost, visiting from Quebec with her family on Tuesday. "I don't find that it's very safe to be on a boat like that. It's much better here." Maid of the Mist could not immediately be reached for comment but its website said it was following the guidance of New York State public health officials. The boats contain markers to keep visitors spaced out, and face coverings are compulsory, among other safety changes, it said.

Mory DiMaurizio, general manager and vice president of Canada's Hornblower Niagara Cruises, said the limits placed on its business by the Ontario provincial government were "disappointing" and that it was "frustrating" to see the American boats relatively full.

I have been visiting there multiple times before the pandemic happened and this is just so sad to witness until today.

Oh boo fucking hoo. You aren't being allowed to profit off of spreading a disease and killing people in the name of the fucking dollar because you have a competent government. "So frustrating."

Why the fuck do people need to go and look at a waterfall right now?

Even if you do need to look at a waterfall, just go look at one in a forest somewhere where you don't need to pack in with a bunch of people to get there.

That definitely should not be legal under New York's reopening plan. It's the strictest state in the country yet they're still doing something that brazenly stupid

Why were they all allowed on the boat? Also, aren't the borders closed?

For folks who have never been, Niagara Falls is basically a border town, just with a big river and waterfall rather than a land barrier. So both sides have their own tourism industry and you can't easily border cross...though it looks like it in that when you're on the boat it feels like you could jump out and cross illegally yourself. It does feel a bit like looking into a mirror sometimes when you see how both sides of the river are built up.

Freedom comes with a cost. Obviously Canadia is not a free country and the socialists in charge are gonna use Covid to continue cramming communism down their throats like free healthcare and forced Gates vaccines containing the mark of the beast. Proud to be American cuz at least I know I'm free.

Wait the American boat was only at 50% capacity? It already looks crowded enough....

Ignoring the pandemic, I can't imagine being on a boat with twice as many people as I'm seeing in that picture. It looks like you could barely even move, let alone see the sights. What would be the freakin point?

Both sides are stupid for different reasons, but at least one is relatively safe.

From a Canadian perspective the risk is fairly minimal and social distancing can be done responsibly. From an amarican perspective ....cause yolo

At least it's good to know business owners putting their business over the lives of their employees and customers is not just an American thing

As an American, I have to say, we are fucking dumb, man. Like it's embarrassing how dumb we are.

he's a bit more reasonable than the stinger at the end of the article made him out to be.

I mean even if your understand the safety protocols and such and you agree with them as an operator you can still be disappointed. Especially when your competitors get to just have exponentially more customers. I feel for the operator and don't feel like what he said was inappropriate
