The graphics in the reveal trailer were unreal. If you told me that it was video of real life, I'd probably believe you.

Can't wait to see how this shakes out. They're certainly saying the right things, and what we've seen looks amazing.

Crossing my fingers for VR support.

Do we know if we'll be able to fly throughout the entire world, or just in certain regions?
This is my big question.
With years of detailed satellite data to work from that have likely built up since the last sim, I'm hoping it will be the entire world.
The comment on commitment to community content at least makes me hopeful modders will be able to fill in details of the lesser known corners of the world.

I have to imagine it will be like past games, where the entire world is available, but with an empty spot or generic buildings/trees over a location not featured.

iOS is essentially confirmed via xCloud
I was thinking of native support but xcloud is another reason to be excited about Flight Simulator. If this game uses realistic 3d models of the terrain to fly over then this sim is a great game to sell on the potential of streaming.

Man. How much of this reveal video is bullshot? Freaking giraffes?
Some flight sim fans who spent time analyzing the trailer to determine if this was real or cgi were able to spot typical in game artifacts such as texture or object pop ins and object clipping. The object clipping suggest they aren't modeling crowds on the ground accurately.

I can only imagine the VR/ cockpit setups people will make for the PC version of the game.

People use to go crazy with this stuff, and I guess some still do.

I was absolutely furious they killed Flight Simulator and its dedicated team!
Similarly I am overjoyed it's coming back.
It's like learning a long lost member of the family is actually not dead and is coming for the next reunion.
Can't quite describe how it feels.

That was a running theme for e3 this year.

Square enix previously: We lost the Final Fantasy VIII code

Square 2019: Guess who's back.

Sega 2004: We have plans to bring Phantasy Star Online 2 to other platforms:

Microsoft: It's been Almost 20 years.

....

Nintendo: Hold my beer Phil

So many long lost revivals unveiled.

Thinking about it, you're absolutely right!
The picture would have been complete if they didn't bother showing FFVII before this e3 and Shenmue was revived this year as well!
We got Panzer Dragoon instead but seriously what a miraculous year this has been!

Uhhhhh... poor choice of words considering why the series fell out of public
I understand your point but the flight simulators dropped off because of just sheer interest in such realism. Even back in the day it was really a PC graphical display genre that those who threw money at could literally feel like flying a real plane. Obviously you had idiots doing stupid shit like re-enacting 9/11 or "training" for such tasks but such small happenings are far more outweighed by the genuine interest.

What happens if I crash into a building? Or the side of a mountain? Can I fly upside down in a 747 and do loops?

This should have being the game of their E3. It's the most promising game Microsoft showed since a long time and they even had gameplay.

I fell like those higher exec at MS don't understand gaming. They constantly say they need to build new promising IPs (or reinvigorate old ones), now they have exactly that with Microsoft flight simulator. But they can't see it and barely promote it. At E3 they should have focused on this game with plenty of gameplay instead of that disappointing Halo cutscene.

It will probably be on Steam too. I'm expecting MS to build a mod platform similar to Paradox new mod platform to be honest. So a universal mod platform for Microsoft Store/Steam/Xbox.

Yeah, Spencer has strongly implied that all upcoming/future XGS games will launch on Steam as well as the WinStore ("My expectation is that our games will be available on Steam"). He sort of dances around the question of existing WinStore titles, but it sounds like they'll be brought over on a case-by-case basis, and judging from the fact he mentions Sea of Thieves is the most requested title, I presume that'll be the first such "port".

While this is good news in a general sense it boggles my mind how badly MS handled their games restricted to their stores.

1. They make the OS that everybody codes their software to.

Valve shouldn't be consistently ahead in offering a less frustrating experience with each gaming feature added.

2. They are Microsoft

This company is massive and has a ton of different teams with extensive knowledge and cash flow to match. It's fine that they were behind in the number of features Valve offered. Noone tried competing with Valve until it was way too late. But the speed at which they offered catch up features felt way too slow. It's another reason to be skeptical of Epic whose only advantage comparable to MS is cashflow. They don't have the built in expertise or even teams anywhere as large. They are already struggling to meet the demands of making new content for Fortnite to ensure that cashflow keeps on pouring in.

3. They didn't offer anything unique that wasn't perceived as bad.

Because Microsoft was far behind Valve to even have a chance of selling games on their store they had to offer features that offered a positive experience to engender curiosity then discussion and then familiarity and comfort with their games. A platform with trade offs is at least going to gain a foothold with some people as opposed to an inferior product.

It is good that they have given up and are going to make their games available on Steam but it is silly how their effort was so poor for the company that they are.

If it's like past games, the game will pause right before you crash, and then play a crashing sound effect.

You should be able to fly upside down in a 747 depending on your airspeed and stress on the plane (or the realism settings).

"Update to an update about an update" – AVSIM member post

Heading into the last week of July the team is excitedly awaiting the arrival of August. There are a number of big updates planned for August and September starting with the V1 release of the Development Roadmap.

Within the next few weeks we'll be providing the official release date for the Development Roadmap, in the meantime, we'd like to share a few of the deliverables from this plan:

  • August (Early/Mid) – Insider Program kickoff
    • First batch of content for the Insider Program members is being prepared for delivery:
      • Advanced preview of the Development Roadmap
      • "In-Sim" content – clips captured from build.
      • Preview Build Program – Detailed information on first build deliverable, Insider participation sign-up
  • August (Mid/Late) – Development Roadmap Release (v.2019.08/drr1)
    • Development beats through EOY 2019
      • Build Program Recruitment and Release timeline
      • SDK Update
      • 3rd Party Content Update
      • UGC Content Update
  • August (Late) – Build Program Kickoff
    • Preview Build Program – Detailed information on first preview build deliverable
    • Preview Build Program – Public Participation sign-up
    • Preview Build Program – Preview of next build details
"What we want" – AVSIM Thread

There are two important plans we will be sharing with you in September:

  1. The pipeline for how we will provide an in-depth look at the product we are building.
  2. The process for how we will integrate the community into this process to facilitate a collaborative partnership to bring this product to launch.
Threads like this on AVSIM, and across all the forums we pay close attention to, are truly valued by the team. So though we may not be directly interacting with you at the moment, we hear you. August is about setting expectations, providing a clear Development Roadmap outlining how we get from today to launch. September is about how we accomplish that task, together.

"Early August for Insider… Hope I get in." – Reddit User r/flightsim

MSFS – You're in. In August we'll kick-off the Insider Program. Insiders will be able to login to the site and be given access to the Insider area, and not just redirected to the FAQ, as per current.

"I want to pay for it in unmarked, non-sequential, low denomination bills, placed in three black plastic bin bags, left on the third floor of an abandoned multi-story car park, at midnight." – AVSIM User

MSFS – Done. Once you make the drop, head south 3 kilometers. Locate a metal trash bin, retrieve mobile phone at bottom of bin. At 1:06AM text "no subscription". Await further instruction.

"Microsoft don't read AVSIM or any other forums, they read their own gaming forums and insiders community forums, it is standard company policy." – AVSIM User

MSFT – Well this is awkward…

Finally, the team would like to take a moment to call attention to AVSIM mod 188AHC. Your effort and contributions do not go unnoticed. Thank you.

Next update coming August 8th!

Sincerely,

The Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

PS: Hint — Announcement coming next update:

They´re reaaaally making sure the hardcore community is onboard, huh — which makes sense, but for me the return of MS FS means a hope of more mainstream-oriented features, like missions, maybe campaign, flight school, incentive to explore the world.
