Fingers crossed mate! You can do it! Do you already know which games you are going to play?
I am replaying the RE series. I want to finish RE6 then move on to 7. I also have OG RE3 that I am planning to replay as well and REmake 1 and 0.

I also have other games that I am nearing the end of like Onimusha and Payday The Heist.

I think I will be able to do it as they are all short games. Thanks for the encouragement!

141. Mutant Year Zero
Mutant-Year-Zero-Road-to-Eden.jpg

So this was jokingly referred to as Dux-com, and overall it is a nice slightly easier X-COM style turn based startegy game. I say slightly easier, but it has difficulty options if you want something more challenging. For one thing, on Normal you have more convenient chance %s; 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%, with the usual higher elevation giving you better hit chance among other things

I overall enjoyed the game but was surprised as to how 'budgeted' the game is, like the only CGI cutscene was the very first introduction one featuring the 3 initial characters, and the rest is either motion comic or using the tiny models you play through the game with.
If there is one thing that annoys me about this kind of games, is when enemies have high HP that it takes 3 turns of attacks from your 3 units to take down. However what I found to be the game's biggest flaw is just how abysmally slow units move in this game, esp. your own characters when they explore the map areas where battles occur in and you progress through.

Woof. I did it! Even if I didn't consider doing 52 games until October and may not count to participate in this, I was able to complete the goal of 52 games. My original post is here with the list of rankings and completion dates.

IteojyY.jpg

50. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (9/10)
Closing out my 2020 replay of the Uncharted series is The Lost Legacy. I forgot how much I enjoyed this game since I have only played it once before this. It cuts out all the heavy drama of Uncharted 4 and returns the pulpy adventure that the series should regularly have (not that I disliked Uncharted 4.) Plays well. I like the open area in Chapter 4 and hope that these games never go more open world than that. I say that, of course, hoping that we get more games in the franchise. Whether it's going back to some untold stories of Nate, continuing as Chloe, adventuring as Sam with Sully, or... other ideas, I just hope we someday get more Uncharted.

niD8onE.jpg

51. Vanquish (7/10)
I played this game back on Xbox 360, but didn't appreciate much back then so I wanted to give it another whirl. After the replay, my impressions of the game are better than my memory. It's chaotic and absurd fun, totally nonsensical, and the game plays sharp. Despite not having much bullshit to deal with, though, in the story and the gameplay, I did find myself just not sure if I was ever actually enjoying it all. Sam gets torn through like paper, I found myself waiting an awful lot either for my health or the propulsion to recharge, and overall it was... just okay.

52. Riven: the sequel to Myst (6/10)
I ended the 52 game challenge with what was the most challenging game of the year for me--really, not just the year but of the last few years. This game kicked my ass. I felt like Michael Scott:
5d0702fa922c2e3adfa43a2bb24f678c.jpg

Except instead of sentences it's just... wandering around. I spent so much time wandering, waiting for the first thing to trigger. Then finding a trigger, but it doesn't work so I don't know if this is the trigger I'm supposed to press or if there's something I'm supposed to trigger before this trigger, and just... wow. Props to whoever has beaten this game without a guide.

It probably doesn't help that I didn't play Myst first. I recommended a game to a friend, and he recommended I play this game, so that's how it was. Still, I've played few games with such an amazing sense of place. It's a fascinating game, I'm just not sure if it's like the Souls games where the first one you play is the hardest, and after that each one is easier, or if maybe this series just isn't my jam.

- - - - -

And that's it for the goal! Last year I completed 41 games, and my original goal this year was 40. Once I was nearing that in October I decided to shoot for 52. Happy I did.

Now I'm not going to focus so much on racing to finish some of these games. Resident Evil 3, Demon's Souls, Yakuza Like a Dragon, and more are in the wings waiting to be played.

51. Star Fox (SNES) | 10th Dec - 1 hour | 4/5

I was so hyped when this game was about to release. I saw the special competition version being played on kids tv on the weekends and reading about the game and watching pictures in magazines. My mom was cool enough to let me have my allowance in advance so I could buy the game on release. Sure it runs at a terribly low framerate but I love this game to death.

42. Demon's Souls (PS5) | 12/5/2020 - 35 hrs | 4.5/5
What a game! I bought the original on PS3 back when it came out, but I stopped after the first boss because it was too hard. Fast forward to 2015/2016 and Platinuming Bloodborne, I wanted to get back to Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, but there were so many other games to play so it remained on my backlog. Now with the remake on PS5, I decided to finally dig in. I really enjoyed it - loved the gameplay and the awesome environments. I'm now going back through to try to Platinum it and I even started Dark Souls Remastered.

43. Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn (PS4) | 12/5/2020 - 2 hrs | 4/5
I realized I had bought the final DLC for this game when I was looking through my digital library so I decided to play through it and beat it. I really enjoyed seeing the story from Ardyn's point of view. The gameplay was fairly boring and I kept pushing through to see the story. Its too bad the other DLCs got cancelled because the DLCs have been improvements over the main game.

52. Bugsnax (PS5) - 7/10. Enjoyably lightweight if a bit padded with backtracking and ultimately pretty repetitive. Was good as a PS+ game though. Took 7.5 hours.

And that's my 52. The rest will be gravy.

77. Immortals Fenyx Rising (Series X) | Dec 14 | 41 Hrs | ★★★★★
Picked up AC Valhalla and was not digging it. Then found out the Odyssey team did Fenyx and I loved AC Odyssey. It's great. The exploring, the story, all of it was great.

Overcooked! 2 | Steam | 5 hours | 4/5 | played with Whimsicalish

This was pretty fun. Similar to the first one, a quick paced cooking game where cooperation and communication is key. I didn't find this game to be nearly as hard as the first one, but we never went through on New Game + to get the 4th star on all of the levels, so it is very possible the difficulty ramps up there. The addition of throwing ingredients also helped make this easier. I'm unsure how some of the levels would be done with only one player.

And with THAT I make my 52 games. Started getting back into a couple longer games so I can start off 2021 with a couple quick completions. I didn't finish nearly as fast as Whimsicalish, but I still made it!

Doesn't matter who did it faster, just that you completed 52! Woohoo I'm already thinking about my next 52 for 2021. ;)

The controls in this game are a little stiff but once you nail a lap/race at full blast it's SO satisfying.

77. SNK Gals' Fighters (2000/2020, Switch) ★★★★☆
Code Mystics have unexpectedly begun porting Neo Geo Pocket games to Switch, and as a recently converted clicky-stick believer, it's nice they've started with some of the higher-priced ones. SNK Gals' Fighters is a cross-over game, similar to King of Fighters, but starring only the ladies from Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Psycho Soldier, The Last Blade, Samurai Shodown, and of course KoF.
This is probably the fastest fighter on the system, due to shorter life bars, quick animations, and no extra stances. Presentation is great, with colourful stages, catchy chiptunes, and the larger character sprites. Also surprising they didn't outright copy+paste movesets from other games like you'd think. One note though: the final boss, Miss X, is a cross-dressing man, presenting as a woman. The game alternates between playing this for cringe-inducing outdated comedy, and some moments of (seemingly?) more sincere gender expression. You definitely feel the age of the game here though, and it uses the outdated term "transvestite". I'm not well versed enough in SNK history (nor the character's) to meaningfully comment beyond the observation, but don't expect a graceful handling of the subject matter here.
Apparently this game somehow got a sequel 18 years later, called SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, which looks like a disappointing and oversexualised follow-up angling for the waifu crowd.

NokEFDYm.png

78. The Last Blade: Beyond the Destiny (2000/2020, Switch) ★★★★☆
This 20 year old combined down-port of the first two Last Blade games to the Neo Geo Pocket Color does not impress at first glance, but won me over in the long run by addressing the core weakness of SNK's portable fighters of the time.
Yes, there's not enough stages to keep the game varied, and the localization suffers from both a dearth of flavour text and ill-fitting 'tude era translations. But where this game vastly outlasts contemporaries like Fatal Fury: First Strike is in the sheer amount of unlockables you can grind for.
New characters appear at a regular clip, you can amend them with cards, and many of them have 2 story modes each. Individual matches are never as exciting as my preferred fighter on the system (Samurai Shodown! 2), but this one has more reasons to return to it.
Last fun fact: in Japan this was supposedly called Romance of the Bakumatsu Special: Swordsman of the Moonlight - On the Moon a Flower Blooming, a Petal Falling, which has to count for something.

79. Samurai Shodown a.k.a. Samurai Spirits (2020, Switch) ★★★★★
This port of last year's 7th mainline Samurai Shodown title is undeniably smaller in scope than many modern fighting games: only 16 characters on the base roster, mere modest amounts of unlockables, and its story mode is basically an arcade mode with interstitial cut-scenes. Instead, it's clear all efforts for this project were laser-focused on producing rock-solid, exceptionally deliberate fighting gameplay, and it paid off shockingly well considering the sheer amount of studios credited on this game.
With rounds averaging only 30-60 seconds max, matches in SamSho are rife with tension, can be over in just a few hits, and deliver razor-tight victory margins with seemingly effortless routine. It's a defensive mind-game, and since everyone's damage output is so high, every successful hit registers as a real achievement or setback. Characters feel perfectly balanced, and can be studied to absurd degrees of detail.
And yet despite its high skill ceiling, the streamlined fundamentals also make it much more approachable to button-mashing fighting scrubs like me. All characters share similar inputs for their different specials (think Smash Bros.), and if even those prove too difficult, you can absolutely win matches with just strong blocking/dodging/movement and well-placed neutral moves.
Such airtight combat comes (perhaps fittingly) at a high price though. The janky online mode is often deserted on Switch just months after release; if any game needed cross-play it's this one. Furthermore, the U.I. feels at once empty and cluttered, loadtimes err on the long side, the tutorial is adequate but hardly comprehensive, some of the female fighters have dumb skimpy outfits, and even the presentation suffers in some areas (mainly faces in close-up). If you're willing to push through the negatives though, you will find a rewarding and absolutely thrilling game here.

Best looking game ever. Only issue I had was too short which rarely happens.

79: Final Fantasy IX. End: 12/17/2020. 12 Hours. Loved

I still love this game. I never did a rush to get Excalibur II before this playthrough either, so it was a slightly new experience. It's great that a game I have played through several times can still surprise me.

47. Gears 2

I don't remember Gears 2 being this good. I remember being bored, while in reality its's super fun and has lots of different things to throw at you. Maybe Gears 3 was boring? I guess I'll find out soon.

48. Crackdown

Crackdown, on the other hand, is booooooooring. It's fun to mess around in, but boring. Pretty much just kill everybody and be done with it. Not sure what's all the fuzz is about but will start Crackdown 2 shortly.

49. inFAMOUS Second Son
In my mission for 100 Platinums (which I'm failing) I've decided to revisit inFAMOUS Second Son. It still holds up pretty good and looks even better. After firing up Cyberpunk 2077... yeah, that game is not good on consoles. Overall, nice game, even though it feels a bit like tech demo.

50.

Call of the Sea

Honestly, I wasn't expecting this. Those puzzles... I started to give up at the end and googled a walkthrough at the end to see a few solutions. Overall an amazing experience, specially if you're into these kinds of games. Kinda bummed about how they handled the ending, but I guess it makes sense.

51.

Crackdown 2.

Damn, I thought Crackdown was boring. I don't get it with this game. If first one had at least some story with bands and stuff, this is straight up "hey, there's mutants". Not sure why they decided to change the looks of the game. Not sure why people were so hyped for Crackdown 3.

Here I am. 2 weeks to go. 1 game to finish. I guess I can call BOTW #52, but I don't want to. Dead Space? Mass Effect? ReCore? Another Gears?
...I think I know exactly the game I want to play for the #52.

#49 - Carrion (PC) - 4/5

Carrion was the main reason I took the $1 deal for 3 months of Game Pass and I can happily say it didn't disappoint. It was very interesting to be the monster for once. Going into the game, my biggest concern was being overpowered and the game not feeling challenging, but I can at least say I died several times and had to change up my strategy. While most encounters feel like they can be brute forced, there are enough sections that force you to think a bit that the game rarely felt boring. It was a lot of fun unlocking new powers and being able to use them to approach encounters in different ways than just charging in for the kill. Puzzles were usually pretty straightforward, but since they used the powers they were at least visually interesting. Not sure how much time it took because I can't figure out how to get Game Pass to show, but I'd estimate about 4.5 hours.

#50 - Minit (PC) - 3/5

Minit is a very short experience, only taking me 1h27m to beat, and that was with a fair few moments of being unsure what to do next and having to run around the map. It was enjoyable. I didn't collect everything as honestly by the end of the game I was starting to get a little tired of the 60-second interval gimmick, but the game was short enough that it didn't bother me too much. The art style was nice enough to look at. Probably won't revisit this one for 100%, but it was definitely a nice enough game.

Past week or so has been pretty hectic, but squeezed these in. Now that things have calmed down, I can get back to my long-term games. Was going to play Abzu for my 51st, but unfortunately it crashed five times at the exact same spot so I kinda gave up. But I know what game I want to play in its place, and definitely what game I want to play for my 52nd.

Last games of the year. I won't be finishing anything else I'm pretty sure

November
54. Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS5 - 10 hours) November 15th : Surprisingly short, but a great introduction into the new console generation. Swinging never gets old
55. Astro's Playroom (PS5 - 4 hours) November 16th : 100% plat, I was surprised by it, because I thought it'd be just a short tech demo, but it was more like a celebration that went over my childhood

December
56. Assassin's Creed Valhalla (PS5 - 110 hours) November 19th : I don't know why I do this to myself. I love the series, I spent the most amount of time this year on this game, and yet it wasn't as good as the last. Too many bugs, and lackluster ending, and combat felt...worse. I liked the environments, Eivor, and the settlement though (wish you could do more there). I'll play DLC whenever it comes out

As of now, my top ten are:
Hades
Ghost of Tsushima
Kentucky Route Zero
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Persona 5 Royal
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Spiritfarer
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
Astro's Playroom

Oh yeah, I guess I owe it to myself to post in one of these threads since it's what set me on the "challenge" all those years ago. For the first time, I actually did finish 52 in a year. Some are technicalities, but it's my list and I didn't find anything to be "cheating". My goal was originally, back in 2015 or whenever it was, to clear backlog. Now, that's thoroughly shifted to a new goal of... simply playing my games instead of sitting on a phone for as long as I do every day. I still spent way too much time on said device this year, but seen as how I actually did play so many games this year, there's definitely some extra time being put in.

Typing up very short thoughts on everything for some groups I'm in, and going to make a few Top x's (some rankings for 2020 releases, some rankings for favorite played this year). But until that point:

Games Finished in 2020

First few games in the list will be "live updated" titles. Those that are played throughout the year/a fair bit of time, but have no real end point. I still consider them worth putting on my list, however. Considering multiple personal goals are achieved, or events finished in each, I see little difference between them and an episodic. The difference is just that the episodes never end.

There's also a fair number of rhythm games here. I consider going through each song in a tracklist at least once to be finished. Wai Wai Party and Bandori are "exceptions" in the list resting at the top because I play them more than the others and wanted to keep track of time on.

    1. Bandori — as of December 30th — 95~ Hours /// Absolute epitome of animu Gacha. It just has a fan-friggin-tastic rhythm game connected to it. I do delve into the stories every so often though, and the cast is honestly all pretty lovable.
    2. Slay the Spire — as of February 24th — 48 Hours /// I listed this as my GotY last year, despite barely playing it then. But I saw something in it. And boy howdy did that something shine through this year. My January and February were absolutely devoured by Slay the Spire with nearly 50 hours in two months.
    3. Groove Coaster Wai Wai Party — as of September 20th — 20 Hours /// Probably put too much money into DLC for this considering how much I play it, but that's neither here nor there. A fantastic port, though. Well worth the sale price it often goes on.
    4. Animal Crossing: New Horizons — as of December 30th — 260 Hours /// The ruler of relaxation in a video game finally arrived to Switch, and what a title. It's got many ups, it's got plenty of downs. But a new Animal Crossing being delayed to land during a Pandemic was the greatest gaming accident that could have happened.
    5. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate — as of August 29th — 15 Hours /// Friend said we should play this again after not touching it in forever. It's still a fantastic game, really. All the different Styles and Arts give so much variety. Not that I really take advantage of them all, but it's just the possibilities even existing! Mixed with the glut of content this is one monster of a game.
    6. Spelunky 2 — As of November 8th — 8 Hours /// I don't know what to say about this game. Not everything has to click. But I really do wish the sequel to one of the best roguelikes ever clicked more with me. I hear it's been patched since to alter some things, I've not fully given up on it or anything, as it's definitely still very good. It was just way more brutal and far more unforgiving than the original.
    7. Donut County — January 15th — 1:40 /// A very quirky reverse Katamari. I enjoyed the characters present, and the situations were humorous. Would I play it again? Probably not. Would recommend to a friend for cheap for a weekend play. Best part of game was item descriptions, those got some good laughs.
    8. Project Diva X — January 26th — 2:30 Hours /// Initially I was disappointed when this released as they made every video that of a stage show. And the track list was comparatively small! But in my annual playthrough of this series, X is always one of my favorites. Maybe it came at a good time and I'm just perpetually nostalgic.
    9. Project Diva Mega39 — February 24th — 10 Hours /// The not-a-port but totally-a-port of Future Tone to Switch. Gameplay is totally intact and at 60FPS on handheld. A first for the West. Like a lot of the tracks present, but not as big a fan of the arcade gameplay style as that of F/X.
    10. Ori and the Will of the Wisps — March 16th — 12 Hours /// I feel this is a game that will be marred in my head for a while. Coming out right as the pandemic started to hit, its hard not to associate the two. And I remember letting expectations get way too high with the delays. It is still a phenomenal game mind you, truly one of the best in the year. But I think we all know what ridiculous expectations can do.
    11. Megaman Zero — March 22nd — 4~ Hours /// A game from my childhood that I had never beat until this point! And boy what a brutal one it is. RPG mechanics left a lot to be desired, but the action gameplay on display is absolutely still a best in class.
    12. One Step from Eden — March 31st — 5:30 Hours /// Megaman Battle Network gameplay lives on as a roguelike battlethon. Loved the bit I put into this (before Animal Crossing consumed most time), you could feel the labor of love. There's a lot of mechanics to learn an juggle, and some more tutorials or manuals are in order, but the game is real fun and anyone who liked the BN games should give it a shot.
    13. Torna The Golden Country — April 19th — 21:30 Hours /// This is what I hope future Xenoblade games will build off of in terms of battle systems. It just felt so much more active compared to 1 or 2. And considering everything else that made 2 great was here with the world and music, I'd say this standalone DLC certainly lived up to its sale as a retail box product.
    14. Liar Princess and the Blind Prince — April 22nd — 4 Hours /// What I'd call a solid 6. It's not bad, it's not great, but everything present comes together in a package that I'd say was worth playing. A cozy title for sure.
    15. Final Fantasy VII Remake — May 13th — 35 Hours /// A divisive title, luckily I fall on the 'loved it' side. Wanted to play more so badly once I got to the end. The battles were fun, the story was great, and the possibilities are exciting.
    16. Bloodborne — May 23rd — 7:30 Hours /// Still one of my favorite games of all time. That said, I think the game really does fall off in the back half. Everything from Rom on certainly doesn't keep me as engaged as things prior. And the Nightmare is thoroughly frustrating. Even still, I love playing this yearly.
    17. Tetris Effect — May 29th — 1:30 Hours /// This game in VR is seriously something else. Going through the "story mode" had me grinning time after time. The audiovisual experience is wonderful.
    18. Theatrhythm Curtain Call — June 15th — 17:30 Hours (3 in 2020) /// First off, I played this for more like 10 hours this year, but I got to credits in 3, hence the earlier jot down. It's Final Fantasy music in a simplistic rhythm game with okay to great charts. What's not to love?
    19. Dark Souls III — June 27th — 28:30 Hours /// The only Souls game I've ever played and finished. The game being so much faster and more aggressive than 1 and 2 being the driving factor. It's too soon to jump to conclusions, but I might need to (re)replay this in 2021 alongside Bloodborne. Because after my first playthrough in 2017 where I liked the game a fair bit but didn't *adore it*, 2020's playthrough I found to enjoy a lot more.
    20. Dark Souls III DLC (Ashes of Ariandel + The Ringed City) — June 30th — 10:30 Hours [Total Playtime 39 Hours] /// Put the DLC as it's own deal here since it felt more like an expansion to the game. That and the fact I played it separate from the main game. In terms of bosses, some of the best were in these two parts. I'm also a sucker for wintry areas, so the Painted World was awesome.
    21. Sekiro — July 5th — 21:30 Hours /// Screw Isshin. Seriously. I tried to play this in 2019, but it just didn't click at all. Will say that while it at least "worked" in my head for this year's attempt, I still don't like this nearly as much as From's other output.
    22. Furi — July 7th — 2:30 Hours /// What a game. Engaging boss battles one after the other with only the slightest break between, all of it being accompanied by some of the greatest electronic tracks I've heard in video games. At least, in the last five or so years. It was the OST which made me pick this back up in 2020.
    23. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 — July 11th — 3 Hours (Chapter 1) /// As far as sequels go, CotM2 is worthwhile. Nobody expected it, but I think it was mostly positively received. More Classicvania in the style of CV3, still sounding and feeling authentic. A real fun time.
    24. Kid Icarus Uprising — 13 Hours — July 19th /// Let's get out of the way that the controls actually did hurt my wrist this time. Game's still great, and I think a port with gyro would work very well. Dual sticks would never quite work for it. All that out of the way, still can't believe this was a 3DS title! Everything here is larger than the system. A full blown orchestral score (and what a score!), a sizable cast of lovable, goofy characters, beautiful areas, and fantastic bosses are all here with so much gameplay variety. And don't get me started on how it has some of the best 3D on the system. To be so close to launch and hit everything out of the park still makes me say "wow" out loud when playing.
    25. Lanota — 4~ Hours — July 21st /// I don't know, it was okay? Not my favorite rhythm game, has a lot of quirks that I respect but don't enjoy. Won't be going back to it, methinks.
    26. Project Diva f — 2:30 Hours — July 22nd /// My annual playthrough of the Project Diva Series got a bit splintered due to Mega39 releasing in the early months when I tend to run these! PDf remains one of the best rhythm games on the Vita. So many of my Vocaloid favorites are in this entry, and in a rhythm game style I still find to be some of the funnest available outside of arcades.
    27. Liberation Maiden — 1:10 Hours — July 23rd /// Funny story here, that 70 minutes finish time? Yeah, I've put this off for something like six years because I never played past the first stage for some reason. A decent game, and was certainly worth whatever I paid for it when it was on sale way back when. Not sure I'd pay the normal asking price though.
    28. Super Mario Bros. (Second Quest) — 0:50 Hours — July 24th /// For some reason the 3DS has me locked into "Hard Mode" for my original Super Mario Bros even with a delete/redownload. So I finally did that after legitimately never doing so in my life. It's still Mario NES. An absolute classic that still holds up. Luckily Hard mode never felt like Lost Levels bull.

  1. Persona 3 Dancing (Vita) — 1:30 Hours — July 25th
  2. Persona 5 Dancing (Vita) — 1:30 Hours — July 26th
  3. Plague Knight — 4 Hours — July 27th
  4. Persona 4 Golden — 79 Hours (62 in 2020) — August 17th
  5. A Short Hike — 2 Hours — September 3rd
  6. Monster Hunter World — 33 Hours (25 in 2020) — September 5th
  7. Taiko no Tatsujin Drum Session — 8 Hours — September 8th
  8. Hades — 14 Hours First Clear — September 27th
  9. Deemo — 5 Hours (2 were in 2020) — September 30th
  10. Monster Hunter World Iceborne — 40 Hours — October 17th
  11. Dogurai — 2 Hours — October 18th
  12. Super Mario Land — 0:35 Hours — October 21st
  13. Kirby: Planet Robobot — 7:00 Hours — October 25th
  14. Katana Zero — 3 Hours — October 28th
  15. Super Mario 64 — 5~ Hours — November 2nd
  16. Donkey Kong Country — 2:30 Hours — November 4th
  17. Castlevania Rondo of Blood — 3:00 Hours — November 9th
  18. Astro's Playroom — 5 Hours — November 16th
  19. Jamestown+ — 2:30 Hours — November 21st
  20. Nex Machina — 2:45 Hours — November 22nd
  21. Devil May Cry V Special Edition — 13 Hours — November 23rd
  22. Shikhondo: Soul Eater — 0:40 Hours — November 25th
  23. Danmaku Unlimited 3 — 2:00 Hours — November 29th
  24. Project Diva F2nd — 3:40 Hours — December 3rd

Game 17: Grand Theft Auto V (PC) (24 Hours, 42 minutes) (5/5) (December 19th, 2020)
Easily one of my favourite games of all time, I have tons of nostalgia for this and playing through it again was a breeze. The story mode is filled with back to back amazing missions (And some bad ones but we don't talk about the bad ones), the game looks super pretty, the music is amazing, the characters can range from very cool to very bad but they all have their charm. I think this game holds too much nostalgia to say much more.

This will be my last game I finish for the year more than likely. Hopefully I can get at least 20 next year

Main post edited!

Huge wrap up edit to finish up my games this year.

52. COD 4 Remastered (PS4) - First time playing through this again since 2009 or so, still loved it. 4/5

53. The Wolf Among Us - One of my fave TellTale games of all time. First time playing this again since release and it didn't disappoint. 5/5

54. Tell Me Why - Expected a bit more from this overall. First episode started off OK but kinda just stumbled downhill from there. 2/5

55. Fable 2 - I struggled going back to the framerate on this one but eventually struggled through. The combat feels super clunky but I still enjoyed the humour. 3/5

56. Battletoads (XB1) - Super short playthrough but enjoyable none the less. Enjoyed how the stages had a decent bit of variety and will probably play this again in COOP in the future. 3/5

57. New Super Luckys Tale - Enjoyed this much more than the original release of the game, not sure why but overall this just felt more relaxed. 4/5

58. Fable 3 - Story fell flat for me but the combat was a lot smoother than 2. Decent-ish playthrough. 2/5

59. Afterparty - Really enjoyed the humour in Afterparty. Theres not too much to the game and the back/forth walking and loading times got a tad annoying on my base XBONE but it was worth the whole playthrough. 3/5

60. The Gardens Between - Pretty cute and unique little puzzle game. Another little gem thats available on game pass. 3/5

61. Trials of the Blood Dragon - Been waiting years to play this and finally got around to it. Found the controls quite decent for the platforming stuff as well as the much more enjoyable Trials Bike stuff. 4/5

62. Oxenfree - Heard a lot of good stuff about Oxenfree over the years and I tried to delve into the lore and the atmosphere of the game but really struggled. One of the few games this year I just found straight up boring. 1/5

63. Red Dead Redemption 2 - This game took up about 2 months of my playtime. Loved every second of it and this it looks amazing, even on my base PS4. By far the best game I played all year. 5/5

64. Yakuza 0 - Fantastic story and combat. I'm fully invested in the series now after this amazing introduction. 4/5

65. Yakuza Kiwami - Bit of a step back from 0 graphics, combat and atmosphere wise but I hung on for the story and wasn't disappointed. 3/5

66. Katana Zero - Nice litle trial and error combat platformer. Definitely gave me some Hotline Miami vibes. This was another game pass game and enjoyed my playthrough thoroughly. 3/5

67. Yakuza Kiwami 2 - More in line with Yakuza 0 in terms of atmosphere and looks fantastic graphically. The places you explore are full of life and I can't wait till Yakuza 3 comes to game pass shortly to continue the great story. 4/5

No. 69 - Kentucky Route Zero: Act IV - 5/5

This episode had its work cut out for it after the conclusion of Act III.
With Conway deteriorating, but with new friends and a new means of travel, there's a lot going on. I chose to do as much as Shannon as possible because of that, since it is as much her story as his. And by the end of the chapter, what's left from the start is transformed, now in her hands and those that have joined her and Conway all along the way. I'm deeply curious about what happened to Shannon's cousin, Weaver. Junebug and Johnny are about to become a trio with Ezra, although I've had Ezra casually maintain that he's going to reconnect with Julian once he's back on the surface. And I'm worried about Blue's health.

There's a lot of grief in this episode. If the previous act is focused on sadness, fatalism, and obsession, then this one is about memory, grief, and searching. Conway is in a state of accepting his failings, and is towed off before the morning, as promised, to Hard Times. But before he goes, there are some poignant comments about forgetting, and how there's no shame in being forgotten. Well, maybe not for the subject of that lost memory, but for the person who is supposed to remember? I'm not sure.

There's a burgeoning parallel there with Ezra's parents and their downward slope that appears to have concluded with Ezra's abandonment. But Ezra has a blithe kind of resilience, whether he's being picked through the sky by a giant eagle or is mushroom hunting off an underwater river.

It's remarkable how much I care about the cast of this game at this point, which is a real statement of how reminiscent it is of a good novel or play.
I can't wait to find a long afternoon, clear of other things on my schedule, to play Act V.

No. 70 - Kentucky Route Zero: Act V - 5/5

I don't know how Cardboard Computer managed to stretch themselves and provide a new experience in each act, all without losing the plot. But they did, and Act V brings the story to a conclusion. True to Kentucky Route Zero, it brings it to a conclusion, not a definitive one. And also, true to form, the player has a say in where it seems most characters end up. They do this through a negotiation with the game through text, nudging responses here and there. More so even than previous chapters, this one felt like a great evolution of old hypercard games. Click this bit of text here to see how that story might change in the telling, but weigh how many times you'll be able to do that - the game usually won't let you explore every option.

Centering the gameplay around a cat is a brilliant choice, especially following how Act IV took away some player agency with a river and tugboat that moved in just one direction. Instead, in Act V, the player can roam in the most full range of a 3D environment that Carboard Computer has yet created. That free movement is brilliantly balanced out by limited conversational perspective - the cat can overhear conversations and participate in them through some expressive meows, but they aren't the same character as the people. And as for those characters, the choice to guide that cat to each allows one to still pick through thoughts and dialogue options for each.
It's a very free, open approach to the ending. Cardboard Computer has often provided players with different perspectives throughout the journey to Dogwood Drive. Act V continues to open things up, providing one more day at the end of the road.

79. Dead or Alive 6 (Series X) | Dec 21 | 3 Hrs | ★★
I don't get the story mode. Choosing the order made it very difficult to follow. Crappy game to end the year on but hey, 2020.

53. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) | 21st Dec - 17 hour | 5/5

This game was much harder than I rememered. Died 28 times total. Everything just gives you so much damage! Dungeon 5 in the Dark World was also a huge pain in the ***.

November update: 52/52!!!

It's now december 22, but It's been a busy month and these posts take at least some time that I have to be in the mood for to sit down and write. Anyway, I beat my 52nd game in November so I somehow beat the challenge, and the final game took about as much time to beat as the previous 51 combined. Let's talk a bit about ti!

KZK6Qjz.png

52. November 24th | Persona 5 Royal | Playstation 4 | 141hrs 27m | ☆☆☆½(/5)
I loved Persona 5 when it was released back in 2017. Not as much as 4 (which is probably my second favorite game of all time, just behind the original FF7), but still enough to deem it my GOTY in a year where both Mario Odyssey and BotW were released. Since then, I feel like all I've read about it are its problematic aspects, bad pacing and horrible exposition, and with all of this in mind coupled with the fact that I'm older and probably more aware of and sympathetic to the world around than I was three years ago, I was somewhat dreading playing through Royal, afraid that the positive feelings I used to have would be swept away.

Now, anyone who sees the rating before they read this probably understands that this wasn't exactly the case. Persona 5 is still mostly a wonderful game with one of the best turn based battle systems, art styles, characters (except for Ann, who's honestly just a worse Ryuji) and soundtracks. I don't think I ever had a problem with the pacing being too slow (if anything there were parts where it probably should have taken its time even more) and I still don't. There are obviously some parts that could be cut, like most of the group chats which don't really bring anything new to the table, but I was never annoyed by pace of it all. I do enjoy the story as well, even though it doesn't really always make sense, and there are some parts that are confusing more because the game is so bad att explaining its rules and sometimes also making up new ones when the story needs it, instead of actually being clever and complex takes on previously established things.

I don't really feel different about the problematic aspects. The casual sexism and homophobia (both are fairly rare, but occur in the first half of the game, which is probably why a lot of people who gave up on it after experiencing these aspects think the game's full of both) are really shitty and drag the game down, but they're also such a small part of a huge game that I don't really think they ruin the whole thing for me. I just hope the developers realize that they can't keep doing this, because it's honestly shameful that adult men would think some of this was funny. Definitely can't blame those who don't want to play the game because of this.

The exposition is also... pretty bad at times. Especially during the Haru chapter (which is both Royal's and the original's weakest segment, by far) where everyone is speaking nonsense or saying things to each other that the others should already be aware about, coupled with the fact that everything happens so fast and in such a nonsensical way that I just checked out until the palace was complete and the story could go back to at least somewhat decent levels. Never really above "decent" though, because even though I don't agree with many others that the final palaces are reached in an inorganic way, the storytelling does become worse by this point. The emotions are probably stronger, but the there's not much logic to it all. Kind of like a Makoto Shinkai movie, I guess.

A lot of complaints for a 9/10 game here, but be aware that this game is about a million hours long, so even though there are bad parts, there're also a lot of things the game does great. Like I said, Persona 5 had one of the best turn based battle systems, and some of the best art style, characters and soundtracks in all of gaming. Royal doesn't exactly make any of these worse, with some tweaks to make the battle system even more satisfying (albeit easier. I'd probably recommend playing it on a higher difficulty), incredible new songs and new characters that fit in organically with the story, which certainly isn't a case with most Atlus re-releases. The palaces have also all been somewhat altered to fit some new gameplay mechanics (and maybe for pacing as well?), and are more fun because of it. There's also a brand new palace to end the game on, and the storyline around it is probably the strongest writing Persona's had since... maybe the 2 duology? Really great stuff.

I still love Persona 5, at least in its Royal form. I see more issues than before, but still love the same things that I loved back then plus the new things Royal added. It's not my game of the year, but it's certainly one of the best and considering the newly written parts to the story are written and directed by other people than the original Persona 5 (I'm pretty sure at least?), and how quality they are, I'm extremely excited over the future of the franchise.

Also want to point out that Persona 5 Royal really shouldn't take 141 hours for most people to beat. I wasted a lot of time trying to create the perfect Persona (and completing the catalogue as far as possible on a first playthrough), and did lots more level grinding during the early parts of the game than what is really needed. I played the game in a pretty stupid way, is what I'm trying to say. Don't be like me.

Soundtrack highlights, because obviously:
Kichijoji 199X
Wish Come True
I Believe

------------------------------------------------
So yeah, that's it for me. I've beaten some shorter games in december so I'll probably do one more update before the year ends, but the 52 are now all beaten and accounted for. Didn't think that'd be possible, but thanks to this awful pandemic there's been a lot more of me just sitting in my apartment and not having much else to do. Can't say it's been super fun, but thanks to this thread I've at least been able to work towards a goal and not just feel like I'm aimlessly playing video games to ease my anxiety over what the future might bring. It's also been super fun to follow what everyone else here's been playing and disagreeing with their takes on certain games.

Good luck to everyone here who still have some games left! You can do it!

80: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. End: 12/22/2020. 38 Hours. Liked-A-Lot.

(Note that this is only for the main campaign.)

Sticking Zelda on this and saying it was connected to BotW was a genius move. I really enjoyed my time with this game. I enjoyed beating wave after wave of powerful enemies. I enjoyed piloting the Divine Beasts. I enjoyed visiting this world again before the BotW sequel comes out (whenever that ends up being). And I really enjoy these Nintendo Musou games.

44. Final Fantasy XIV: Futures Rewritten (PC/PS4) | 12/25/2020 - 6 hrs | 5/5
I feel like a broken record, but man, Final Fantasy XIV has to have the best written story in 15+ years. I can't believe how the game keeps getting better and better. This patch finishes up the Eden Raid story and it was great. The bosses were challenge and fun to tackle with some friends. The story kept me on my toes and I'm so pumped for it continuing in the next patch. Only a few more patches until the end of Shadowbringers content and the announcement and release of the next expansion. I can't wait! If you love Final Fantasy, you owe it to yourself to play Final Fantasy XIV!

Yeah, those are the ones where I don't know what my playtime is. I was going to poke around in some other posts to see how other people handled that. I don't know how the data is being pulled for the group stats, so I didn't want to break something by taking the field out entirely until I figured out what other people did.

On some of my games that didn't have a timer or I lost track of the time I just used How Long To Beat to get an estimate.

Also congratulations for all those who have finished the challenge!

I'm not sure that there's going to be anything by way of group stats - there hasn't been in any prior years.

45. What Remains of Edith FInch (PC) | 12/25/2020 - 2 hrs | 4/5
I bought this in the Steam Winter Sale a few years ago and finally decided to play it. There isn't much to say other than it is pretty much a visual novel with small minigames that push the story along. It was very interesting although sad story about the Finch family. It was very quick to get through and would recommend playing through it to experience the story.

Another game that I bought in a Steam sale long ago. This is a point and click adventure game made entirely out of paper and cardboard and shockingly made in Flash. All movement is actually the developer panning his camera throughout the house. While the visuals are pretty amazing and unique, modern resolutions do it no favors and makes it a very blurry mess. As for the gameplay, the puzzles are very hard and I had to look up some hints to finish the game. Overall, I don't recommend this "game" as it is more of a proof of concept for, after some research, a full game they made later.

This is a turn based strategy game with lite RPG elements (leveling up, etc.). You start with 2 units you control and then get 2 more as you progress and along the way get upgrades and level up to improve your stats. The above screenshot gives an idea of how combat works; you can move your units to a certain square, then if enemy is in range of any of their 3 weapons, you can attack them.
The combat feels kinda like chess; position unit, take the shot if in range, otherwise leave them there to be able to move them to better location later, once all units have been positioned, end turn for enemies to do the same.
Pretty basic gameplay loop but I enjoyed it. Biggest issue was the game needing a lot of grinding for materials and to become stronger to deal with later battles :S

1945-2 is a shoot'em-up re-inacting one of the final moments of WW2 as you fly many super powered aircrafts such the Mosquito and Flying Pancake, destroying military gundams, transforming warships, culminating with a battle against a powerful bio weapon.
Yeah typical WW2 fare.
Plus is a remix of II with changed up colour palletes and a few alterations to enemy patterns. The former released on consoles and Steam, whereas Plus I played through the digital PSN version.

51) Super Mario 3D Land (3DS - December 19th - 3/5)
52) Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Steam - December 26th - 4/5)

This is it! Real close this time although that was to be expected, considering the time I put into FFXIV. Not sure what goals I want to set for next year, except clearing 52 again. This was also the year I wanted to get more into movies and books, this didn't work out so well lol. So maybe 2021 will be the year where I'll change that. I should have a lot more time at my exposal, I'll still play XIV here and there, but I'm caught up with the story, which was my main goal for that game.

I don't think I'll beat another game this year, maybe I'll start something meaty to get a head start going into 2021, so I'll see you next thread!

I'm up to 55 beaten games for this year and that number can still go up by one or two so. This is the first time I broke the 52 count so I'm happy : )

39 games / DLC beaten so far this year. Will probably hit the 40's as I'm progressed quite nicely on 2 DLC's

52 is not happening though, but it's been a good year for me still. I beat many games that's been played on forever so that's nice.

52. Sunset Overdrive

Yup, that's exactly the game to wrap this year up and finally completing the challenge. Sunset Overdrive was pretty much THE game I wanted to play last generation. Other Xbox exclusives were just there, but Insomniac has become one of my favorite (if not the favorite) studios. Their input is something I can't put my finger on... being able to spit out games with this quality is something that amazes me to the day. Sunset Overdrive is no exception. It's stupid, it's fun, it gives you THPS vibe right of the bat. Honestly, last part was throwing me off but after actually playing the game I can totally see why this game is made like this.

My biggest questions are:
- When's the PS5 version?
- When's the sequel?

And that pretty much wraps it up for my year. First time completing the challenge, but looking at the list back in October I was kinda happy with it already. I've played most of the big releases, I had some fun with Apple Arcade, I've finally pulled a trigger for an Xbox which gave me an ability to check out and play lots of games I wasn't really going to buy even though they looked cool. I guess I know what I should do next. Demon's Souls was the first Souls game I tried but it runs like shit on PS3. I feel like it's time to finally give it a proper go with upcoming 2 weeks holidays...

Main post with the list of games

I've haven't commented on my progress during the year so I though I would summarise my gaming year 52 games later. Two games grabbed me really hard and had me obsessed with continue playing them until I had the credits rolling (took about a week for each game). The games were The Last of Us Part II and Cyberpunk 2077. In both cases it was the story that kept me going. I found that TLoU2 dragged on way to long and had me scavenging repetitive and large areas for loot. Cyberpunk had a few bugs during my playthrough and I decided after a while to just push on with the main quest and save a longer playthrough for the future when the game is in a better shape and hopefully is extended with DLC.

Notable mentions from the year are two games that probably don't get enough attention: Panzer Paladin and New Super Lucky's Tale.

My favourite gaming experiences of the year was Cuphead and FFVII Remake.
