So much dismemberment in this game. I remember that being one of the features. And the multiplayer wasn't half bad.

One of the best things about Kingpin is the challenge and difficulty.

"Re-balanced and polished" is guaranteed to ruin that.

I can't wait to spend 3 hours fighting through the maze like factory level, rescuing the guy, spending another 2 hours painstakingly escorting his horrid pathfinding ass back to the bar and having the game not recognize he's there softlocking me from continuing again.

The rose tinted glasses are strong in here, Kingpin is not a good game.

Remember playing this back in '99. Can't remember much of it storywise, but is was gory as hell back then and the gunplay was fun. Looking forward to the remaster!!

I was thinking of replaying the game a while back. That said, fuck 3D Realms for how they handled Ion Fury. I won't play their version of the game.

I remember Kingpin being average at best and fairly forgettable. Seems like an odd game to come back to.

Blast from the past, I put quite a few hours into Kingpin MP.

SP was decent too if I remember right, been a while.

I'm fairly sure this was the first game I experimented on with a Glide Wrapper, as my card did not support openGL.
It did not work very well though.

I remember enjoying it back in the day, but I have my doubts it holds up.

Also look at those beautiful wobbling polygons!

A full remake might have been something but not really interested in just the original with added bells and whistles...

It wasn't great when it first came out and I doubt it has aged well either.

According to Steam I replayed this in 2014 and it took me 10 hours. I don't remember any bugs/glitches/crashes in it.

Most of the game you hear the instrumental versions, and you know shit is going down when they put the version with lyrics.

The golden age of games being exciting because the characters swear and the music is licensed from from real bands, like bands you hear on the radio. We are spoiled now a days and don't remember the days when a character saying "SHIT" in a game was a real thrill.

For the record, the most notable thing about this game is that it was the first project featuring Viktor Antonov (Half-Life 2, Dishonored.) as lead artist.

Retro Gamer: Issue 178 said:
"I've lived in cities all my life," Viktor Antonov says. "For Kingpin, we went to downtown LA and took pictures for references. you get on a plane, you go somewhere you've never been before, you get off the plane there's this impact of light, colour, smells and architecture that hits you in the face. that's what I was trying to bring."
The original idea was that it was going to be a more sci-fi focused game, in the vein of something like Blade Runner. But it was toned down a bit after Cypress Hill was brought on board.

Cool.

And no idea why this made me think of it, but I wish Rockstar would remake Manhunt.

Side note: I wish they would just release these games at a clean looking 640 by 480. I think a nice chunky blocky look ala Devil Daggers makes these games look better since you are filling in a lot with your imagination.

So, the game has rough edges obviously, but I think it was a key title in its day. It's one of the first FPS titles to focus on a hub/spoke system. You have these hubs you visit where missions spiral off in various directions. So you become familiar with each part of town and missions play out naturally from there. It was a smartly designed game for its day and also quite beautiful.
