within the next few months we are getting Doom Eternal, Resident evil 3, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Last of Us 2 . I am sure you can spend the 300 dollars on those games perhaps instead of waiting for a console in late 2020.

Once again with the "GAMESTOP IS DONE IN A YEAR!!!" It's not like it'll magically stop working, and it's not like GS has announced a complete Ch 7 or anything yet. Even if a local store DOES decide to close, wouldn't the best time to use the card be when stuff is starting to be discounted? When my local store shut down, it still took a couple months to liquidate out the stock at a good discount, so nothing started moving right away, anyways. Gift cards were also usable up until they shuttered, FYI...

Why be in a hurry with these things not YET happening? Unless saving up for next gen console or something.

If there WOULD be a sooner rather than later death knell of the entire company (which in of itself is VERY unlikely), it would happen AFTER the holidays. So your credit safe safe to do whatever (get your next gen console, games for it, etc).

If the holiday goes REALLY badly for them, that could kill them, but I think more likely than anything, the new machines + plus continued Switch prosperity will make for some booming times in games retail. - they will probably be reporting gains and be pretty happy. Its when they get to the later part of a gen (now), when the sales lag and retail gets pretty itchy.

Just slowly spend it on games you want and "pay" yourself with the cash you would have spent on the games anyways. Hoard the cash until you have secured a next gen system preorder.

I had a large Gamestop gift card and blew it on Steam credit. It'll take me a while to use but I felt safer about it.

If you have gaming friends, spend it on Steam gift cards and then slowly convert it to cash by gifting them games they then pay you for.

I do not think Gamestop is going anywhere, but I do think of the 3 stores in my city only one will survive.

"Spend it this year" seems reasonable to me. They will probably survive through 2020 - past that, who knows.

If you're really nervous about it, the suggestion to just buy a bunch of PSN/XBL/Steam/etc cards makes sense to me. You're basically just transferring your credit to other storefronts.

I plan to hold out and hopefully purchase next gen consoles from them but if the situation gets dire, I have no qualms running in and grabbing a few high ticket items to use up all my credit.

Next-gen coming this year should give Gamestop a bump in sales, but it'll be probably too little too late.

I'd use it as a preorder on a next-gen system (if you intend to buy one) then stop.

Yeah, I'll be genuinely shocked if GameStop folds completely this year. New consoles are due this year, the company will limp there by hook or by crook. With that said, I have little faith in the company beyond that point. I think OP should absolutely wait until new console launch day and sink all of the credit on a PS5 or a Series X.

I have around $850 of GameStop trade in credit. I plan I'm using it on the next gen consoles. I got an email from GameStop about the Xbox Series X to sign up for updates for when to pre order. I think might just pre order the next gen systems from GameStop's website and just get it delivered because of the convenience and I do think there is a possibility of one of the Gamestop locations in my area will close. If you are worried if your local GameStop will close just try to preorder from GameStop's website and get it shipped to you.

As someone who just left the company recently, you are 100% fine to wait a while. Gamestop isn't going to die anytime in the next year when there are still new projects and stores that are being built and tested.
If you're that worried about your store, you can use the credit on the website and Gamestop actually offers decent shipping now.

What happen with their assets if they file for chapter 14? I mean anytime soon they are going to do so, I would recommend to spend it on a PS5 preorder.

Act immediately OP. I heard they're closing shop right now so you have until midnight to react.

The last time something like this happened in our 'niche' was Toys R Us. Once they filed for BK, I believe all the giftcards where invalidated. But I'm also pretty sure they gave everyone a heads up. Also, they didn't file BK and close down out of the blue, the writing was on the wall for a while, and there were rumors they were doing it too.

I haven't heard anything of the sort from GS.

Not entirely.

Toys R Us continued to honor gift cards after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September, but when the company announced on Thursday that it will close or sell all of its U.S. stores, a spokesperson told USA Today that the company would only accept the cards for the next 30 days. That means that, as of about April 14, gift cards to the store will be worthless, so customers need to act fast.

A small window, but there's always a window to use them when a company goes under. THAT is when you have to act fast.

I'm sure it's already been said, but I'd spend that balance sooner than later. If I were you, I'd probably try to hold out for PS5 or Series X pre-orders to go live, and use that balance to pay one off.

You'll be ok. Sony, Microsoft would not let that happen due to the coverage that they offer.
When the UK equivalent (GAME) went wobbly on multiple occasions The big 3 made concessions to support them

Sell it to someone who wants to buy hardware and take a $20~ hit.

you find out they are going into administration when it happens, then you wont be able to use it.

1. Spend it all on Nintendo games.
2. Sell those games for near enough what you paid.
3. Be happy with the cash, at a minor loss.

Whaaaaa? When did this happen? What did they do?

Game have gone into administration more then once, the most recent time they got sold.
They were loaned stock so they could continue to carry on selling games.

Nobody on Sony or Microsoft's sales teams want to see the largest specialist retailer of videogames in the world fall over in this way
. It won't help them.

If you were genuinely concerned, you could use the credit to buy Xbox store credit (which lets you buy hardware) or PlayStation store/Nintendo store gift cards.
At least it's not going to waste on random stuff

Can't he purchase a pre-paid CC and then use that in the fall for a next-gen console?

The company isn't going to suddenly stop existing, even if they do go under you'll have time to spend your credits as they liquidate inventory.

People act like they're suddenly gonna wake up some day and find all the gamestops chained up or on fire...it doesn't work that way.

If you want to cement your gift card value. Spend it on other cards that have credit (eShop, PSN, XB, Amazon, etc.). If anything it will be like a few cents lost on top if you sell it.

I wouldn't worry about Gamestop going out of business anytime soon. If anything they will have a restructure and just cut their amount of brick and mortar locations.

You will have time to spend your card anyways. Even if they file for bankruptcy its not like they will suddenly close up the next day.
