An 80-85 woiuld have been better indicative, it's a good game with great gameplay brought down by repetiveness and empty and unnecessary open world.

I voted no. The moment to moment gameplay was fantastic, some of the best stealthy shooty I've ever played. However, the rest of the package failed to deliver - poor plot, unnecessary grind and the mother base stuff felt vestigial. It's an excellent game, but not without pretty glaring flaws.

So everyone's entitled to an opinion, but boy this is a doozy.

Have you played any of the other games in the series?!

Best game in the franchise? Wtf are you smoking?

I played all of the games in the franchise at least twice each. Including the MSX Metal Gear games and the noncanon spinoffs like Acid or Portable Ops. MGSV is the best by far.

While the gameplay and some missions were excellent, no, I don't think it should be that hight becase the story is a resounding mess, Chapter 2 is horribly designed, and the open world was hurt because of weird drop zone systems paired with long intros and nothing of interest between enemy bases or checkpoints (which made sense but it also made the world kinda tedious to traverse).
Oh, I should mention bland boss fights as well and Kojima ripping of himself.

I still think the game is very good but not as good.

Some of the best, most smooth gameplay ever created. Nothing felt better this gen, except maybe Bloodborne. But the actual level design, story, and the open world was questionable. Top notch acting too. Kaz Miller was great.

I never agreed, for me it was an 8/10 game best at best. The story was probably the worst part, confusing (for a non MGS fan like me) and with too many silly bits.

No.

The gameplay is excellent, but it's also very repetitive and there's no remotely decent connective tissue between everything to muster up interest in me. One of my biggest gaming disappointments this generation.

MGSV has the best gameplay in the series and you would struggle immensely to find any other game to have better gameplay mechanics than this. It got the gameplay spot on but the metal gear part of it was nearly non existent.

Yes.

It is a great game. Even though I was somewhat disappointed by the story, the gameplay loop and base mechanics more than made up for that. I think I spent 100+ hours on this game and I loved it. It's weird because I see the glaring flaws of this game, but I still loved it and I still rate it very highly. If it had delivered on its full potential it would probably have been the best game ever created. But even with its many flaws its still an incredible game.

For an MGS game, the story is my least favourite. The gameplay is the best by far.
MGS stories are a big part of the games. I don't think that score is indicative of the story. As the game is, score seems too high.

No where nearly as overrated as MGS4. MGSV actually plays really well, MGS4 doesn't do anything well. It's just junk yet got all those 10/10 scores.

I don't fault people for liking MGSV, it's a very fun game.

Perhaps it's because it was the first MGS game I've played, and because of that, I had zero expectations and zero nostalgia going into it. I would give it a 7.5 or 8 at best. Story matters a lot to me in single player story driven games, and it made zero sense, even after watching story recaps of all the other games. Gameplay was top notch but super repetitive quests so yeah, not an amazing game for me.

I don't see how anyway can score it more than 9 because of the story tbh, so yes 95 is too high

I'm a fan of MGS 1-4. I enjoyed Ground Zeroes.

I just couldn't get into the loose play style of Peace Walker and V and the story wasn't compelling in the slightest.

MGSV was one of this generations biggest disappointments.

never agreed with it, but i think its about the guy behind it and the easy pass most reviewers are willing to give him over the game itself.

It's a masterpiece and one of the best game ever made, more than 3 years later and people are still talking about it, I know some supposed amazing game from 6 months ago almost forgotten now.

It's still the best action TPS game ever made, it's still has the best execution in gaming and I will always be angry about Kojima/Konami for not finishing the game.

The gameplay is absolutely fantastic, and I loved the sandbox world for planning and executing missions. While there was some repetition, I always had fun with it until the very end. The end was a bit abrupt, though I had a lot of playtime by then, so it doesn't sully all the gameplay up until that point. The story was dumb, but it almost redeemed some of the plot points of Peace Walker. I appreciated the lack of cutscenes and story, actually, after the disaster that was Peace Walker's story. I genuinely don't know how people can say that TPP had the worst narrative after that game.

The biggest strike against the game is that it doesn't expand upon PW's gameplay and allowing you to do missions online with other people. That was completely wasted on an inferior game.

Yes. Gameplay is outstanding and the story, albeit not without its issues, is not as intrusive as past entries.

85-99 would have been more fitting but I thoroughly enjoyed the game, even if the story was a bit iffy.

It's the only mainline MGS title I haven't finished and never will. While the gameplay is superb everything else about MGS V feels unfinished, repetitive and strayed so far away from the concept of other MGS games that it should've been a new IP or spin off.
I'm really glad there are many other excellent MGS games for me to enjoy as V isn't my cup of tea.

From one side, the open world nature killed the pacing and the storytelling of the series, but from the other side the open world gave us the best gameplay in the series.

I like Metal Gear because Kojima managed to find, for the most part, a good balance between storytelling and gameplay, in MGS V there's no balance and i was highly disappointed.

There are plenty of games with gameplay mechanics as good as MGSV. I find it hilarious when people say that MGSV has "the best gameplay ever". Monster Hunter: World is my GOTG and its gameplay mechanics are close to perfection.

Pretty much all the games in my TOP10 have awesome gameplay mechanics. There are plenty genres beside 3rd person shooters and even then Vanquish for me is the definite TPS so far.

yes, I just finished yesterday. My first time playing a metal gear, so the story didn't bother me too much. (I look on youtube what happened before to have an idea on who was each character and things like that). Is a shame the game lacks a final ending and feels like the second act could have 10 more missions instead of some rematch of older missions. But the gameplay is so good! and Even if is just the 40ish main story mission plus some side ops there is a lot of game on it.

And what a game. You can do the missions any way you want and plays perfectly. The open world is not as interesting but has many great locations on it like the oil refinery, the Soviet hangars or the Afghanistan village.

Such a shame Konami didn't pick up and made a spin-off using the engine to make more interesting missions. Some indoor ones would have been cool.

But with all the problems it has is still a superb game. (For comparison, I couldn't finish RDR2, the gameplay and the mission structure put me off so bad I totally drop off in the middle of chapter 4).

Overhyped mess just like Death Stranding will be. The gameplay was tight though so I guess that's a positive.

It's still an amazing sandbox and I wish more titles took advantage of it. Perhaps that's why I enjoyed Survive so much.

Maybe not 95, but i would easily put it high 80s or low 90s. All of the damage done by Konami with cutting dev and slapping in Motherbase Bucks really brought the experience down.

The game probably has the best bones of any AAA game ever made tho

For the first half of the game: yes, but the second half should be a 6/10 being generous

It still baffles me how MGSV got a 95 score whilst Witcher 3 only got a 92. MGSV was a very boring game with repetitive environments and very limited mission variety to me. I'll admit that I've never played an MGS game before 5, however judging it as a first time player to the franchise and keeping an open mind about it without any bias based on previous games, I still found it to be extremely boring and repetitive. It felt like you were doing the one same mission again and again which ended up with you shooting all the guards in the head with the tranquilliser and using the Fulton device to transport them away. The story was also very lacklustre.
Witcher 3 on the other hand had several very interesting and immersive quest-lines which kept you hooked for hours on end as well as a multi choice dialogue system which made you evaluate your actions. Not only that but it had many different environments around the map with different beasts/enemies and it just felt fresh when traversing the map. I can't say the same thing about MGSV which had a very empty map with maybe a random animal here or there and a copy/paste military outpost with a few guards every few miles.

It's pretty sad to me that Ground Zeroes ended up being better at the concept than the Phantom Pain. Ground Zeroes had you infiltrating Camp Omega with different possible strategies and balanced around the items hidden around. It had side objectives like rescuing Chico and there was many ways to actually find out where Paz was. Infiltrating in that one was fun. There is one base that is challenging to infiltrate in the Phantom Pain and that was OKB Zero the rest is pretty much terrible outposts or communication station or small boring random village. Some of the missions are so bad I remember one where you have to kidnap bunch of enemies in a village and you can actually get max rank by simply standing in front of the door of the house they are in, wait till they open it and fire the rubber bullet shotgun then fulton them. Good Lord.

As a prologue Ground Zeroes worked well to set the tone for the story too. Then you don't even get to fight Skull Face in V at all he dies crushed by the metal gear what a twist.

MGSV deserves praise for having one of the best controlling characters in a third person shooter.

However for the shortcomings of the story, the lackluster and recycled content of Chapter 2 as well as the mind numbing Quiet shower scene, it should not have gotten the praise it did. More importantly the fact that the mainstream outlets did not mention the issues that plagued it goes to show what those outlets focus on, and whether or not you should trust their assessments of video games.

Across PS4 and PC I have around 250 hours in MGSV, not including GZ and it left me disappointed overall.

The game was a horribly written mess. Changing from Hayter to Sutherland was a huge mistake.

Having Snake as a somewhat silent protagonist ruined it along with its fake open world. It's more open level than open world since sections are cut off during your missions.

Played 20 hrs and stopped. First MGS game that I had absolutely no desire to finish and no desire to go back and play.

You know there is something seriously wrong with a game when dozens of people say it was a disappointment despite having some great core gameplay. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it.

The shitty motherbase microtransactions and rediculous timers and grinding killed it for me. I would probably rate it about a 7-8.

I loved the moment to moment stealth gameplay but everything around it was terrible.

Cons :

- silent protagonist mostly and a shitty story
- boring openworld with nothing to explore or do besides grind plants
- a completely incomplete 3rd chapter
- everything related to motherbase and it's grinding

Pros :
- 60fps and nice gfx for the time
- smooth third person mechanics (probably still the best going around)
- some fantastic stealth missions and bases

Yes, it deserved that score just for the amazing game play itself. I never imagined the game would play like a dream before release.

The second half is a disaster and the game is unfinished. Reviewers had to rush through the game because it was under konamis control with many using the chicken hat to complete it in time.

The gameplay is def a 95. Since that was more important to me then the story or open world crap - I would say yes. Earned it, had it been finished (chp 3) with a compelling story it would have deserved OoT kind of scores...

No.

Horrendously written game.

Mechanically great but everything else is the worst of the series by a country mile.

Let's be honest, Kiefer as Snake was a bad choice, Whoever voiced ocelot, that was another bad choice. The introduction of quiet was another bad choice and the "twist" at the end is probably the most painful thing ever done to a franchise with as much stock as MGS.
