I loved the game but the moment I finished it I already knew that score was malarkey.

Is the game still fun to play again? I haven't played it since finsihing it in 2015 and was turned off by the extreme monetization of FOBs and stuff. Is it still fun to replay?

Controls are great, but I pretty much disliked it overall in every other aspect. Worst Metal Gear I played.

Nah.

Core gameplay is A++. No doubt. Maybe best controlling game I've ever played.

But you can feel miles of dusty scaffolding and unpainted walls around it. A grand vision cut short.

I bet Hideo acknowledges that in his thoughts, to a degree. The whole affair with Konami must've been messed up in many ways.

game doesn't "deserve" it on virtue of being literally unfinished... but damn if it wasn't one of the greatest experiences i had this gen.

a very begrudgingly earned A+

No, I enjoyed it greatly, but like with almost all of the super hyped AAA games, I just don't believe that essential all critics fall on the same page, to create such a MC average.

But I admit that, as such, I don't really pay attention to such topics usually. It's how things work in this industry and ultimately has no meaning to me.

Nope. I put in over 100 hours into this game and enjoyed the gameplay quite a lot but the story and music are both really disappointing, which were a big part of Metal Gear for me (even having said that, the barren plot that is there is still better to me than MGS4's & Peace Walker's awful story/cast, but that's not saying much). A real visual treat when it came out and i can see why people were caught up in the "oh wow open world so good" phase, which is a lot of games on here for people.

I especially don't think it deserves such a high score with all the games that have come since.

I hope Death Stranding is much better on the story and music front.

Mentioning the metacritic score reminded me a lot of Bioshock Infinite, it was competent enough in the basics that you start to gloss over how ill conceived everything is

I did enjoy the game but its very over rated game and not a very good Metal gear solid game, you can tell they decided to can half the story and cut scenes, it could of been one of the best MGS games but fell short thier was not enought cut scenes and story.

I did not know it got 95% im shocked to be honest.

Gameplay wise, it is one of the best games of this gen. But since story was supposed to be important, and it ended being mediocre, I can't agree with that score.

Worst MGS ever despite the great gameplay. Some really good stuff in it that's marred by the worst plot and unfinished game design and content. And I'm not a fan of throwing David Hayter away.

Yes.

Still probably the best controlling TPS of the gen

Story was still great. A true testament to the meaning of The Phantom Pain..it is in that way ,the game truly succeeds in earning its 95 Metascore

Best game in the series and the best action/stealth game ever made. The story has some weak moments but overall I enjoyed it, including the twist.

I'm playing it for the first time right now and about half way done. I really liked the game play at first but all the missions are samey and starting to feel tedious. Hitman kind of ruined it for me because I really wish I could disguise (this need to be in all stealth/immersive sim games).

Story is interesting at first but this middle part with all these pmc crap is really really boring. No good boss fights so far. That metal gear looks really dorky. I'll continue a bit more and might just watch the rest.

This is actually tough to answer for me... on the one hand it has the worst story, cutscenes, etc in the franchise. On the other hand it easily has the best gameplay around and just feels great to play.

The world sucked, the story sucked, the base sucked, the stealth mechanics were good.

But I still got tired of tranquing and using fulton...way too tired of it no matter how novel a lot of the other aspects of AI manipulation were.

No. It's a testament to the gameplay mechanics how far they can carry the game when literally everything else is so unfinished, but they don't carry it to a 90+ score in my book. Not even close.

It's probably the most blatant example I've ever seen of a modern day AAA game where the developer clearly ran out of time or money to finish a project. If they had another 2 years of development time, I think it would have deserved a 95 or better. As it stands, it's about an 85.

No. For as amazing the core controls, mechanics, and story mission structures are, it couldn't carry the game's absolutely useless story and miserable sidecontent.

By all means, it's a good Metal Gear game but not of that caliber.

If only the last mission would have been in the game it would at least be somewhat conclusive and deserving of the score...

I was going to say no but then I remembered that BoTW scored even higher and suffers from the exact same issues that V does. So, why not?

It has plenty of fans and that's cool. I'm glad so many people enjoyed a game.

I wouldn't even give it a 65, personally. I'll never go back to it and I'm glad I wasn't the one who bought it.

It's the Far Cry 2 of Metal Gear Solid games. You wander around Africa clearing outposts, listening to audio tapes, and collecting diamonds. Missions are designed in a way that largely respects the sandbox. It doesn't shove you into an arbitrary set of rules every so often. If you're told to extract a hostage, you can do that however you want.

Incidentally, also MGS V owes quite a bit to Pandemic's Mercenaries. But its utilitarian approach to world design and the use of overlapping systems instead of explicit scripted missions is pure Far Cry 2.

During the development of the original Splinter Cell, Clint Hocking and some of the developers squabbled over the proper direction for the series. Hocking wanted player freedom. Hocking wanted players to be able to go anywhere, come at a problem from any angle. The other side wanted a linear series of set pieces because Metal Gear Solid did that and they wanted to make a "Metal Gear Solid killer". But in the long run, Hocking had the last laugh because Metal Gear Solid turned into a hybrid of his two games -- Chaos Theory and Far Cry 2.

I don't think it's worth losing sleep over Metacritic. There is something to be said, however, for how insane waves of hype around certain game series with high levels of prestige attached to them cause a certain sense of myopic adoration.

No. MGSV is a very clear example of a game which received extremely high reviews because reviewers did not (and were not able to) spend enough time before scoring. The largely lame Chapter 2 (and farcical 'Chapter 3' nonsense) diminish the game enormously.

Why can't you guys just accept that some people love the game because it's an awesome videogame to them, ffs. Just read this very thread.

Absolutely, GOTY for me that year, and all around MGS V: The Phantom Pain is one of my top favorite games. A masterpiece in one of my all time top series. One of the best games ever, and for me easily the pinnacle of stealth gameplay. At least in my favorite style. Even though they had to cut a sideplot etc to ship it, it's longer than MGS 1-4 and PW combined, and kept me into it the whole time. And I loved the ending cutscene. One of a kind game.

I absolutely loved the way the game felt to play, but everything else about it was pretty weak. Didn't mind the mission structure at all until they started repeating. Couldn't have cared less about base building. I still like it, but it's not a 95

Metal Gear Solid V ends at the end of Chapter 1. The death of Skull Face is the equivalent of the death of Peace Walker in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

"Chapter 2" is an epilogue in the style of Peace Walker's. A series of side missions including a huge number of (optional) harder versions of existing missions that wrap up a few key plot threads, and also contain a second ending. Peace Walker was the same. Quiet's mission and the game's second seconding ending is the equivalent of Paz stealing the Metal Gear and the boss fight against her, which was followed by a second ending.

And "Chapter 3" is the Metal Gear Online nuclear disarmament ending. That's why it is called "Peace".

Mechanically the game was great, it could of been a sandbox and I'd still mess with it given how fun it was. The only gripe I have with the gameplay were the driving controls.

But the games story, mission structure and design were pretty uninspired, the base management wasn't fun either.
I'd say a 88-91 is more accurate

99% accurate assessment. Nuclear Disarmament ending is FOB online ending, MGO is separate.

People 6 months after release already came to the realization that it was nowhere near deserving the platitudes it received. It was a Kojima title and was scored as such. Just like in the long run RDR2 will be knocked down quite a few notches but the Rockstar machine generates high scores in that hype window

Stupid stuff like Quiet's outfit and the story overall aside, it has one of the best gameplay experiences ever. It felt amazing to play, and I would even challenge myself to beat missions without anything in my loadout (apart from things that are mandatory. For instance, I'm not sure if you can even find C4 in the mission were you blow up the oil tanks so I brought some with), which is something I rarely do.

It's just so damn good.

Nah. It definitely is ahead of its time with how dynamic the game is, and how it rewards creativity. Though it's missing the story and a bit of the structure that holds MGS games together and make them special.
Also the boss battles were dissapointing especially coming from Kojima who's made some of the best bosses and boss fights ever.

I can see why it got the scores, but it's a dissapointing MGS game.

Not at all. The gameplay mechanics are great and the controls are incredible. But the story is trash, the open world is pointless, and the base stuff is annoying.

It deserves it as a game.

As a narrative experience, something previous MGS excelled at, it might not live up to a high rating.

But as I always say, when they said MGS4 was the last proper MGS and a close out to the story, I believed them. That game already gave me closure.

I never expected V to be another story MGS game, and so I wasn't dissppointed. It's a gameplay-focused coda to the series.

It is the best TPS of all time, with the best gameplay mechanics and best A.I of any action game. it is even better than RE4.

it made me feel that games like Uncharted 4 are very boring.

Surprised the poll leans so heavily toward No. It's not what I wanted from a fifth Metal Gear Solid game, but even so, it's one of the best tps/stealth games ever made.

I guess the only real thing that would make me think it should be a hair lower than it was is the somewhat lacking amount of "original" encounters out in the world.

Nah it had awesome gameplay but a Metal Gear game would need more than that to have a 95. But the story and world sucked. It could have an 85 or something around there.
