Having watched Dragon Ball and Z for the first time between 2017 and 2019, I gotta be real, "hot take" or not:
DB = DBS > DBZ
I still like DBZ a fair bit, but between the Buu arc not exactly wowing me and the overall decrease in focused character work/fun interplay, it was a bit disappointing to me relative to the original. I feel like DBS amped up the excellent relationships between the characters; DBS Vegeta in particular is just phenomenal.
If that came at the cost of noteworthily mixed art quality and a downward tick in grit and originality, no big worries to me. And if folks aren't generally as impressed with the fights as with DBZ, again, I don't especially mind.
I'm mostly here for the characters. Roshi aside (I'm sure the broader net will label this comment "peak Era," but the old man who uh literally tries to molest young women trope sucks and shouldn't be there?), I like damn near everyone.
And I still can't get over how cool it is that Pilaf and his adorable oafs not only returned; Mai herself became a major character for a while. Genius.
