Obviously from a geo-political standpoint, 2020 is a shit show. But games wise, its been pretty amazing so far

Of the big AAAs I've personally played, I've had 2 8s (Resi 3 and Doom Eternal) two 9s (Ori and HL:A) and a 10 (TLOU2)

I've got personal high hopes for Ghost, Halo and SM MM. I am intrigued by Cybepunk and expect that will review very well. Plus of course, new hardware which is always exciting even if the launch line ups are small

And perhaps even something from Nintendo? You never know (I say this as a non AC person, I'm aware that for some there has already been an incredible Nintendo release this year)

In the the future discussion of 'greatest years in gaming' I will probably make the case for 2020

I can't think of one game that's come out this year that I've been interested in.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 is the only game I'm hyped for, lol.

2020 has two 10's, TLoU Part II and FFVIIR.

Anyways, it's a pretty regular year so far imo. It's no 2017. It's a good decade starter, but 2010 was a fantastic one.

There's a notable lack of Nintendo games. No Zelda, Mario, Metroid does not bode well for any year imo.

I've definitely played less games this year but I've already had 3 games score 9/10 or above so that kinda compensates - Dreams, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, TLOU2.

I don't really see it for me personally. Doom Eternal and TLoU2 were good but they don't compare to the best games from 2015, 2017 or even 2018. Maybe Ghost, Cyberpunk or Halo will help up this year's stock but so far it's been a pretty average year.

Hell yes. Doom Eternal, Zombie Army 4, LOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Cyberpunk are and will be amazing games.

I like this optimistic thread because 2020 has been pretty bad other than video games. Although because of covid-19 I did get a full 2 paid weeks off of work to play LOU2 because I worked out of the country. So there are silver linings.

Half-Life ALYX gave me everything I wanted this year.

Everything else is just gravy.

Had a lot of fun with Ori and TLOU II. Whether or not this will end up a top tier year depends on Cyberpunk 2077 knocking it out of the park. Given what we've seen so far, I think that's a likely scenario.

I would also love to play Alyx but the VR cost is putting me off a bit.

Its been a good year so far although it looks like the second half is going to be badly affected by delays from the pandemic, particularly from Nintendo.

the new Paper Mario comes out in 4/5 days and early impressions seem to be pretty positive. Still a possibility of those rumored Mario remasters.

As for myself, yeah I've really enjoyed this year so far. FF7 Remake, TLoU2, and Nioh 2 have all been top-tier releases for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with CoD Warzone, and more Halo games releasing on PC have been great. I've been playing a ton of Hades recently, and while it technically first launched in 2018 it will be hitting 1.0 this year so it arguably counts. ++ Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk and Deathloop on the horizon, it is shaping up to be a pretty good year in my books

The year has been amazing (gaming wise) so far. One of the best final years of a generation actually.

It's okay so far. Enjoyed FFVIIR, Trials of Mana, RE3R, TLOU2, Brigandine and Ori. We've had Januaries that are stronger than the entire year so far though.

I agree. Don't let yourself get pulled down by some of the miserable people on here.

2020 has been and will continue to be absolutely fantastic gaming wise.

Yea I agree. Obviously it just comes down to personal taste though. I don't have 2017 as the most amazing year ever like some people.

FF7R is something I never thought we would get, so for me it's a great year. Enjoying TLOU2 right now.

Can't say I've enjoyed anything this year enough to call it "top tier". Even FF7R, as good as it was, fell short.

2020 has reignited my love of console games, I absolutely loved FF VII Remake, really liked the Trials of Mana remake, and got the Xenoblade Chronicles remake, finally took the plunge on an Assassin's Creed game, and got into Horizon Zero Dawn.

Getting the Fairy Tail game and Streets of Rage 4 later this month, and eventually I am going to pick up the Sakura Wars game.

Of the type of games I like to play TLoU Part 2 and Cyberpunk easily make this my best year ever (unless CP is mediocre which I doubt), slightly edging past RDR2+ GoW for 2018.

Good year so far, but idk, I feel like 2017, 2018 were stronger years overall at this point? Though I'm more optimistic about what's coming out next. I usually like to play more of the smaller budget/indie titles, and this year I can't recall anything special, can someone recommend anything I missed out on?

It's really good, like most years this gen. The Last of Us 2 is a masterpiece, but you also have Alyx, Eternal, Ori 2, EDGE 10 Dreams, Streets of Rage 4 and probably some others I forgot (or haven't played). It would have been a good year if this was it, but we're only halfway.

It's fine but I wouldnt put it over the last 3 years by any stretch. Clearly the pandemic is a strain on things though so it's understandable.

It's finally a year where we get a straight up old school looking third person shooter with Outriders. It's also made by People can fly which has me pretty hyped.

It's fine, I guess.

Alyx was the high point for me.
I have high hopes for Dirt 5.
The rest is just business as usual, every year has these sorts of games.

It's been something of a downer for me. Despite being incredibly hyped about them Doom Eternal and Resident Evil 3 Remake were fine but failed to live up to the instant classic feel of their predecessors, Animal Crossing just eventually felt like a grind and The Last of Us 2 is so not the game for this moment imo that I won't touch it for a while despite again loving the predecessor. The closer we get to Cyberpunk the more doubts I have too.

The only game to really enrapture and stay with me so far is FF 7 Remake. Streets of Rage 4 was good fun I guess too but otherwise just... ehhhhhhhhh

2020 has already given me 2 GOTG contenders in the likes of TLOU2 and FF7R, so I agree that it's been absolutely fantastic so far.

2020 is the year of Halo for me AND we are getting 2 next gen consoles, so that's gonna be such great fun with some hidden gems like DeathLoop

Final Fantasy VII Remake is the only 2020 games I've played and absolutely adore. But I adore it so much that hey, that's fine.

Animal Crossing, FF VII remake, Persona 5 Royal, Ghost of Tsushima, Last of Us 2, Cyberpunk, Xenoblade DE. It's been a pretty good year so far. Need one or two more Nintendo heavy hitters though.

I guess if by "top tier" you mean high expectation AAA games that didn't come close to living up to their pre-release hype maybe. Fully expect Ghost of Tsushima to be next in that regard. Of all of the games I've played this year, aside from FF7R simply being "OK" most of the time, and tiring at some points, Nioh 2 was the best so far this year, and it wasn't even that different from the first game.

I've already played, finished and loved the original XBC in 2013, so I wouldn't be counting the DE for myself, and it remains to be seen if Cyberpunk is even half of the game many are expecting it to be.

Been absolutely fantastic for me so far.
Animal Crossing, Dreams, Persona 5 Royal, The Last of Us and while I haven't played I yet, I'm very much looking forward to Ghost on Friday.

Not for me it ain't. The titles I've liked so far are really good (Ori, Black Messa, Streets of Rage 4) but not great. Doom Eternal and TLOU2 were my most disappointing sequels of the gen. And I have little to no interest in the upcoming big titles. Only thing left is Crash 4 and I really hope they don't fuck it up.

All in all this year is like 2014 part II for me.

I can't agree, only thing I'm hyped for is Spelunky 2. Only one thing this year has left a lasting impression on me so far and that was Animal Crossing, everything else was a mild "eh that was ok" like Streets of Rage 4 or just crushingly disappointed me like FF7R.

It's to be seen how many of these games really stand the test of time, but as far as I'm concerned, it's a great great year. Next-gen is gonna bring us stuff like Halo Infinite and Cyberpunk at launch - cross-gen, sure, but those are quite the names. Some of the late-gen arrivals include games like The Last Of Us 2 and Minecraft Dungeons. In terms of PC-only stuff, some iconic franchises that made history on that platform like C&C, TrackMania and Serious Sam are back. Half-Life is back, shockingly. It's also a year of a bold new Assassin's Creed and Watch_Dogs, Doom Eternal improves on Doom 2016 in many ways, long awaited games like FF7 Remake and Ori 2 arrived and did not really disappoint.

Again, to be seen how many of these things will be relevant in some years, but it's quite a list all in all, and I'm certainly buying plenty of things this year.

One of the weaker years for me, there's been some good ones and we don't know what Nintendo'll do, but as of now there's been precious few standouts.

I think my top games right now are FFVIIR (a game with many issues), Streets of Rage 4 (great) and RE3R (having now played the original I had a blast with it). The rest is kind of filler (playing some older games from past years) or have been disappointing (TLOU2, Doom Eternal).
