EDIT 2: since 2017 and 2007 were strongly mentioned years too, I have edited the poll so everyone feel free to specifically move their vote to thhose options. I now that it is a bit unfair since most people have already voted and won't come again to change their vote, and this will make that the options will not be accurately represented, but better late than never!

EDIT: I would like to point out that, for me, the best year was 1998, not 2020!

Disclaimer: the fact that Metacritic and Opencritic reviews are linked does not serve the purpose of justifying that specific games are good or bad, but to provide a tool for users to be able to easily see what games are being discused and to have acces to major reviews to get better insight about
the mentioned games, since probably many users haven't had the chance to play absolutely all of the games discussed.

With 2020 coming to an end and every major release already reviewed, I think it is fair to start an interesting discussion regarding videogames. I know that 2020 has actually been a really terrible year in every country around the world and for every user in this forum due to Covid-19, so in no way I'm downplaying the influence that this horrific pandemic has had in everybody's lifes. Once this has been made clear, let's get into matter.

2020 has undoubtedly provided us with a large amount of high quality games, from little indies to major AAA releases. Even though this is a matter that has been subject to constant discussion, the main consensus (or at least, the point of view that has major visibility within gaming community when this topic arises) is that 1998 is probably among the most noticeable/best year in videogames history.

This might the first time that a true contender has arisen to dispute 1998's "champion belt", so let's get a visual summary about how has 2020 performed. The following list does not correspond with a top list, so higher or lower in the list does not mean better or worse. Every game will be accompanied by a brief non spoilery synopsis and links to metacritic and opencritic:

Long ago, we looked upon a foreboding sky. The memory of the star that threatened all burns eternal in our hearts. In its wake came an age of silence. I might be forgeting some great titles, so that gives you an idea of the hugh amount of videogame releases that we have had this year. I have also tried to represent different styles and genres.

Now, let's go with what 1998 offered us (this time I'm not providing links of synopsis since they are already well known games):

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Tekken 3 (home consoles)

Half-Life

Gran Turismo

Metal Gear Solid

Pokemon Red & Pokemon Blue

Grim Fandango

Banjo-Kazooie

Thief: The Dark Project

Baldur's Gate

Unreal

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

Resident Evil 2

Starcraft

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins

Fallout 2

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six

F-Zero X

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Xenogears

WipeOut 64

Final Fantasy Tactics

Parasite Eve

Tomb Raider III

For me this is a difficult take. There is no discussion that many of those 1998 games are among the greatest of all time, and not only that, but also they just defined videogame history in general. So, I'm still keeping with 1998.

What's Era's take on this one?

No, not even close lol. It was a pretty weak year overall tbh. There were a lot of good games but very few things that really excelled and grabbed me like previous years.

Like, last year when I was writing a GOTY list I was struggling to whittle it down to just 10 games that I felt excited about being on that list. This year I'm looking at my GOTY list and it's like outside of a couple of these, in a stronger year most of these games wouldn't have made my list.

When all you can remember playing which was released this year is TLOU2 you kinda know that this wasn't the best gaming year in history.

i mean ... it was good but far from "best year in gaming", i would not even cogitate that

I'm gonna commend you for the effort but it's a no. I'd even say 2013 was a better last hurrah before shifting gears to next-gen.

I have to say, I preferred this year's indie offerings compared to last year, which is something I can't believe I'm saying. Last year's indies were phenomenal.

For me I think from like 2017 it's always been the best gaming year, meaning it's just the best gaming period overall.

Can't beat 2017 but it's a fantastic year for sure.

Nioh 2, P5R, FF7R, Ghost of Tushima, Alyx - all fantastic games. If you're a PS player it's been bountiful.

It had Alyx and TLOU2, two of the best games ever made.
Hades is also easily the best rogue-lite game ever made.
So it was pretty good overall. Hard to beat 1998 though.

Nice effort on the thread OP.

But for me this is a year like any other. Probaby middle of the pack.
I think there's many years I prefer over this.

Most recently 2017 and 2019 I like much better

I just would like to point out that for me best year is 1998, as I stated at the end of OP hehe. I think I should have put that at the beginning!

God no. 2020 was good on paper but was wack all around. People say last year was weak but we didnt have fucking Covid plus it was an all around better year in gaming.

1998, 2007, 2017, 2015 etc were miles ahead also.

It has, maybe it's because of the pandemic (probably) but I can't remember the last time I've played this many games in a year and thought wow this is fucking fantastic.

Hades, #GOATshima, TLOU2, Crusader Kings III, FlightSim, Valhalla, Ori, Spelunky 2, and many more I'm forgetting - the list just goes on and on.

Fantastic year with fantastic games.

Good year, but 2017 and 2019 were better imo.

I think 2017 - 2020 might be the best stretch of gaming years of all time.

It was a very good year, probably fighting with 2015 for the second best year of this gen. But nothing matches 2017 for me, that year was insane and probably best gaming year ever for me. 98, 04 and 07 also obvious candidates to be put ahead of this year.

2019 was far better, no stone cold masterpiece like Disco Elysium in 2020 for one thing.

Hell even the sequels to DOOM 2016 and REmake 2 ended up kinda disappointing.

Of course not. Just 3 years ago we had:
BotW
Odyssey
Rocket League
Sonic Mania
DOS2
Metroid Samus Returns
PUBG
Persona 5 which wasn't rereleasing
Hollow Knight
Horizon Zero Dawn
FF14: Stormblood
Cuphead
Wolfenstein 2
Nier Automata
Nioh

And even that some don't consider the best.

No, 2015 is still king.

The Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Shadowrun Hong Kong, Dying Light, Life is Strange, Ori and the Blind Forest, Heavensward, Arkham Knight, ...

Yeah this year wasn't that great.

All in all I felt like there were a lot of good games, but not a ton of great or incredible games. Like, there was lots that were enough to scratch the itch but that's about it.

Animal Crossing is a cultural phenomen, but it definitely needs more updates. Flight Sim, The Last of Us 2, and Ori are incredible. I love Hades but it's hardly my top rougelike. Those are pretty much my top games of this year. I can't think of anything else that I thought was incredible.

2017 was way better IMO.

There have been some awesome, awesome games this year - two of the best I've ever played even (Doom Eternal and TLoU2) but I can't really call it the best year ever. Too much of this year was spent feeling like there just wasn't much out there I wanted to play, not to mention the kind of excruciating wait for next gen systems (don't worry, before you say anything, it wasn't actually excruciating).

The best years for my money are 98, 2004, 2010 and 2017.

Didn't really feel this year. P5R & FF7R were both fun but also disappointing in their ways (P5R ruined the difficulty balance of the original far worse than P4G did, FF7R should have been a lot better given the source material). PS5s are impossible to find. Nothing I've played feels like it really deserves a GotY.

2004,2007 and 2013 is better for me, the problem with 2020 its hard to separate gaming world with all the shit happening.
