Didn't see a thread on this.

As of this writing, the special runoff election will commence tomorrow on 5/12. This election is to fill the seat of former congresswoman Katie Hill (D), who had resigned back in November 2019, for the remainder of the her term ending in January 2021.

The 2 candidates facing against each other are state assemblywoman Christy Smith (D) and former Navy pilot Mike Garcia (R). Pardon me using ballotpedia there.

After Katie Hill's resignation, CA Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation for a special election that took place on March 3, 2020 (Super Tuesday), with a runoff election taking place on May 12 should no candidates reach 50% of the primary vote; Smith only got 36.2% of the vote, while Garcia got 25.4% of it, due to the vote being split among 12 candidates.

Though this is the first election to take place in California amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted Newsom to an issue an executive order to send vote-by-mail ballots to all registered voters of this district (the option to drop off ballots in voting centers and drop boxes is still there). Worth pointing out that Smith is in support of Newsom's approach to slowly reopen the state's economy, while Garcia supports Trump's approach of reopening states ASAP.

More here. Kind of nervous in light of seeing this.

I just hope my district pulls through, but if not Smith and Garcia will face off again in the November general election for the same seat for the 117th US Congress.

BTW, Trump is endorsing Garcia. Know what you're thinking, how is this relevant to this topic? He's been making tweets about this particular election lately, where he is claiming Democrats are rigging the election. The context: a voting center was approved in Lancaster prior to the runoff election. This voting center was actually approved, by the GOP mayor of Lancaster ironically enough, to ensure that African American voters wouldn't be disenfranchised. Coincidence?

And in case there is anyone that lives in the district and still hasn't submitted their votes:

List of voting centers.

List of drop boxes.

Edit: Mike Garcia effectively flipped the seat back to red.

Seat flipped red.

State Assemblywoman Christy Smith conceded defeat to Republican Mike Garcia.

Hopefully this can remind people to not get complacent in November.

I did my part and voted for Smith. Even if she doesn't win this runoff, she still has a chance to win the election in November.

It's not that ironic. CA is full of RINOs and DINOs.

That said, it seems like these candidates are not those, so here's hoping Smith takes it.

Huh. I see now. But still pretty great that the mayor approved a voting district!

How many Republicans are in that district vs Dems?

Not exactly the answer to your question, but I'll say this district is pretty conservative, however lately in CA-25 the demographics there have shifted to younger and more diverse, which is what contributed to Katie Hill winning the 2018 midterm election.

No worries. Does seem a bit concerning then. But at the same time for a district to go to a Dem, then they leave office in scandal, it probably makes it hard for another Dem to win again in the short term.

Garcia has been running without mentioning his party affiliation, for one.

For another, big chunks of not los angeles and not san francisco are heavily red. Part of the reason the 25th flipped blue in 2018 was redistricting.

What happened to Katie Hill was a total fucking travesty. She should still be in this seat.

Yeah I live in this district but in pretty sure it's gonna flip back to red again. Real bummer because I was so happy when Katie won this seat.

Just went and dropped off my ballot for this at a drop off box, while I was wearing face mask and gloves. Guy guarding the ballot box says "I guess I know who you're voting for." All snarkily. He was in shorts, no mask or anything, and I said "Yep, I can probably guess who you voted for too. Have a good night." He didn't answer and just glared at me. "Or you can can just go fuck yourself too. That works." I said before I waved at him, and he just flipped me off.

This divide between the two parties just ain't gonna get any easier is it?

All the stuff I read said Smith will do better/is more likely to win in November because they're expecting record turnout from Democrats voting against Trump and will vote down party lines, but that Garcia was more likely to win this special election because they generally favor republicans. Hope the gap closes with more mail in ballots counted because a 12% loss is not as close as I thought it would be.

Did my part voting early but holy hell did I get more calls/texts asking if I voted than anything I've ever experienced. Was hitting double digits last few days. Also when Trump tweeted about the election being stolen on Saturday is when I saw a massive caravan of pro-Trump trucks with flags/Garcia signs/MAGA signs driving all over the place. Also dumb protestors wanting everything to re-open were out on full force that day near City Hall.

This was wholly rigged from the start.

Big student population in that district. Two colleges, one is an experimental art school that I went to, both had a huge amount of students displaced from the district due to COVID. I'd guess the numbers are down with under 35s because of this, more than anything. I know maybe two or three students that are still in the area.

Damn. Back to square one again. But honestly again, I personally wasn't expecting the turnout to be that great. I don't even know if people were aware of this election, despite all voters being given mail ballots.

Hopefully voter turnout turns out better in November. Read some comments thinking that it's a sign that California in general will flip red. Right....

Too bad Garcia won but I heard he was a good candidate. Throws water on another blue wave in November little less momentum.

I don't think it's really any less momentum
30 year GOP seat finally won by a Dem, only to be lost to a dumb scandal. Don't think it's shocking it went back nor do I think it means much nationally.

Mostly just meant that since Trump, the GOP has lost almost every close seat and special election like this, or underperformed. This is the first that broke the GOP way in a decisive way, not "making a blue wave impossible" ornanutninf obviously, but just throwing water on the momentum. I was expecting a Democratic win to be honest but I've only been following it from a distance.

And this is yet another example for why Democrats should not resign or step down under any circumstances.

Disappointing result, but Smith gets another shot at it in November, hopefully there will be higher Democratic turnout then.

Wow, glad that happened. Good on the mayor for actually doing that.

Oof. Does this mean he's only in office until November and then he has to get re-elected again?

Yup.

Edit: Saw a CNN poll saying Trump is leading in battleground states (the opposite of what all other polls I've been seeing are saying) despite the 80 thousand plus dead and the great depression economy incoming.

Go out and vote.

Worth bearing in mind, I do recall Steve Knight leading Katie Hill in the 2018 primary only for it to be the opposite of that in the general election. Just hoping for a repeat in this case, with Smith picking up the win this time.

But as now, I'm now stuck with a Trump loyalist representing me until January of next year unless he wins again in November.

Also going to also add: Fuck Katie Hill's ex for the revenge porn he did!

Edit: Meanwhile, it doesn't seem like the Wisconsin special election for the 7th district faired much better. Dammit again!

They literally lumped a bunch of states together and had like a 300 person sample total between them. It's a questionable at best poll and methodology on the battleground part.

But yes no complacency if people want him out of office.

Yes, this seat will be up for election again this November.
I could be wrong here since this entered a run-off. But the district already voted for the November candidate in March too. They actually had two separate spots for this election during the in-person voting in February. There was a special election and the November election for the CA25 district. I know the ballet due yesterday was only for the term ending next January, but not sure where that other election went.

Any clarity?

No, her ex released revenge porn of her and she was hounded out of office as a result. She never actually did anything wrong, the whole thing was sexist bullshit.

We voted on two primaries for the 25th District in March. One for the special election, and one for the November election. The special election only happened because no candidate got a high enough %, so the top two (Smith/Garcia) moved on to the Special Election which just happened on May 12. This special election was to fill former rep Katie Hill's seat until her term ends. Come November, we vote again on who will serve the next full term for the 25th District. Both Garcia and Smith advanced to that, too (top 2 % primary candidates advance, regardless of party in CA). So Garcia will only serve a few months and then have to immediately defend his seat.

From what I followed the past month, most of the local polling/articles showed it was always going to be a very close race, but that Garcia was favored because voter turnout for this special election favored Republicans for numerous reasons, mostly a lower turnout by Democrats. Assuming the voting numbers go up in November because of anticipated record voting, and that most people vote down party lines, Smith has a much stronger chance to win. It would have been a much better situation if she had just won now, though.

And yea, Katie Hill should never have had to resign, and we shouldn't even be in this situation.

Katie Hill Sex Scandal + traditionally republican-held seat + off-season election = special recipe for a flipped seat.

Republicans will try to spin this as momentum in a blue state, but it's not gonna gain traction. There are too many asterisks on this one.

And of course I remembered Republicans of accusing Katie Hill's win being because of ballot harvesting. Fucking hypocrites!

And again, why complain about the they side cheating if you won!
