Well crap...

What's this thread and why should I care?
This thread is home to ratings, cancellation news, news about pilots/shows being developed, and general industry news.

Recap:
Last season brought us the launches of every streaming service up the wazoo, Baby Yodas, Modern Families Wrapped Up, Good Places were Placed, and we bidded adieu to Schitt's Creek...
AND THEN HELL HAPPENED.

THE PANDEMIC AND ITS EFFECT ON TV.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit TV HARD. And everything was paused until recently, shows are given the go ahead to film now albeit constant testing and isolation while they film, crowd shots are likely a rarity for awhile and older cast members and immune comprised staff are given to choice to sit things out. Because of this, the TV season is in a weird spot as some shows that were filmed for the midseason got saved to the fall, other fall shows got delayed are filming later to early 2021 and reality TV has suddenly come back with some caveats. TV Movies like Lifetime and Hallmark are already running low budgets and low staff anyways so people like DrForester are still doomed to watch them and of course, the loopholes...expect a lot of these for the next few months.
image

That or people talking to a TV or live sports where half of the stands are green screened videocams, no people, some people or cardboard cutouts like that one episode of Power Rangers.
sub-buzz-26325-1559776171-1.png

Oh right...the OTHER THING.

ALL (TV) COPS ARE CANCELLED

After the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks and other black people by cops over the summer, protests over police violence grew and that spilled into people wanting police shows canned or stop being as one sided (*cough* Blue Bloods *cough*). As a result, COPS and Live PD (which it's reckoning was coming anyways) were canned by their networks and people wanting Cop-aganda shows such as EVERYTHING PRODUCED BY DICK WOLF, Blue Bloods and other shows to refocus or at least stop being such power fantasies. Even one of the staff from the upcoming Law and Order spinoff was fired after he threatened on Twitter that he would fight against protesters. With the pandemic already putting shows to a halt, some shows are still in a rut such as Brooklyn Nine Nine which had to reboot its plans for their upcoming season. It also spilled back to sports with sports leagues taking a knee and posting Black Lives Matter messaging all over. Expect to see this also be a lingering thread as shows restart filming.

STREAMING WARS

Oh dammit this thing as well...

So yeah, last year, ATT completed their takeover of Warner Media and launched HBO Max (at the cost of HBO GO or was it NOW?), Universal launch their service Peacock as well, Disney was the first though launching Disney+ and before those, we have CBS All Access (CBS AAAAAAAA) Paramount+, Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video. (What's a Quibi?) As TV becomes more focused to streaming despite running OVA TV stuff, a lot of the networks have focused on shared programming or marketing their services on TV. Oh right, Viacom also rebrought CBS because holy shit.

Look up online for streaming plans because ERA is an INTERNATIONAL SITE and content and pricing differing in each country.

(Also we have Pluto, Britbox, Tubi, Crackle, Epix, IMDB TV...WHY ARE THERE SO MANY OF THESE!)

Ahh! That new thread smell! Thank you for the great write up in the OP, mreddie!

Posting network TV ratings every day (after 11am ET/8am PT) will be pretty dull this fall but it's worth it just to see those groans on everyone's faces.

Yep! It sure seems so. I barely have any network TV comedies to watch this season. Fortunately, streaming is kind of picking up the slack, but I feel like I've burned through so many shows so quickly already due to the pandemic and me not leaving my house as much.

....Has it though? Like outside of Close Enough on HBO Max. I really can't think of many other streaming services that have had comedies. Feels like it's drama after drama with them.

So far this summer, I've watched:

"Awkwafina is Nora From Queens" (HBO Max) (Originally on Comedy Central)
"At Home with Amy Sedaris" (HBO Max) (Originally on TruTV)
"Barry" (HBO Max) (Originally on HBO)
"Dollface" (Hulu)
"Search Party" (HBO Max) (Originally on TBS)
"Mythic Quest" (Apple TV+)
"Never Have I Ever" (Netflix)
"Upload" (Prime Video)

I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting. But if you're looking for new shows, I'd recommend all of those I just listed.

Awkwafina I wasn't a fan of...
Same for Dollface (although Brenda Song is hilarious in Amphibia).

Aw man, Search Party got moved to HBO Max? Why have the Turner Networks (Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, TBS) pretty much put almost all their new content this year on there? TBS literally needs content, it's gotten so bad they're doing reality TV show dramas now there.

Gonna assume you meant Upload, but I was kind of ehhh on it? The drama elements felt forced, and it feels like a lot of the comedy was way too inspired by The Good Place for me to find appealing (love The Good Place, this show just felt too much like it).

At Home with Amy Sedaris I feel like is really good at what it aims to do, but it's way too surreal for me, lol.

Mythic Quest I have definitely been meaning to watch though, just Apple TV+ is still one of those things that I'm like "how do I even sign up for this and where do I watch it?" Haha.

Err, yeah, I meant Upload, not Upgrade. My bad. I changed it. I was kinda ehh on it too but it was mostly enjoyable for what it was. Whoever made that thread here really overhyped it. (Watch "Forever" on Prime Video instead. It's so much better!)

As for Turner stuff now on HBO Max, I feel like cable in general will lean even more than they already have on reruns and reality shows, while streaming will get most of the scripted shows. It sucks but cable is basically all filler now.

And Apple TV+ shouldn't be that hard to set up, should it? I switched to iPhone a few months ago and set it up pretty quickly.

Thank you for your hard work

No problem! I was also thinking about posting Netflix's Top 10 every week, probably on Sundays since I don't post TV ratings for Saturday night (because what's the point? lol).

I know a few people were floating the idea of posting it but Netflix updates it every day, and that's a bit much, I think.

What does everyone think of the idea of me posting Netflix's Top 10 every Sunday?

(Double posted. Oh well. I'm already messing this new thread up. Lol.)

I don't even interact with the ratings portion of this thread and I think that would make sense.

This season had a lot less surprise cancellations than last year (even though the number of longrunners that ended or will end this year is still sizable even compared to last season). Some of them more than others, but I was prepared for the end of most of them. In memoriam.

Arrow: In what was basically a season used to wrap up whatever plotlines they had left, it was nice to see the cast act out one last time as well as (hopefully) passing the baton to Mia. It wasn't the best season, but it was better than the past couple seasons. RIP to the show that started the new DC TV universe and managed to unite them all in the end.

Agents of SHIELD: And to think I wrote this show off after its boring first season (besides the final few episode). It now boasted my favorite cast of superhero shows. This was basically a victory lap as well as their best chance to draw closure to Agent Carter. After having abysmal ratings, it was nice that they managed to finish their story and then some.

The Good Place: What and ending. It got me misty eyed to see the fate of some of my favorite characters in a comedy in some time. All while telling an interesting tale on the afterlife, religion and how to help people do good. I'm gonna miss those cockroaches.

Fresh off the Boat: It slagged off in the past couple seasons, but this show will have an important role in showing an Asian family into the TV screens.

Party of Five: I didn't think much of the show, but I wish they gave it another chance. The characters could have used some work, but it was a compelling story that could have made an impact in the world.

Steven Universe:Future It's a bit of cheating to use what is basically a miniseries, but it was an amazing cap to a captivating series. I didn't mind the early seasons, but things really picked up in the later seasons, ending with a banger of an ending. These shows of CN just keep on ending. The new shows have huge shoes to fill. Speaking of which...

We Bare Bears: Dammit. I was hoping we'd get Icy Nights 3. Ah well. But it managed to end on a high note with the wonderful TV movie.

Escape the Night: This was just a cheesy guilty pleasure I checked out because it had a few youtube personalities I followed. I'm not to bent up about its cancellation, but it passed the time well.

I Am Not Okay With This:
At the very least, they managed to get through the source material... which is pretty controversial. Thankfully, they scrapped off the worst parts and gave us a story with a much better protagonist and group of characters. It sucks that it ends with a cliffhanger, but as a conclusion to the source material it makes sense.

Marvel's The Runaways: It was inevitable, but Disney is making way for its own content as it removes the last traces of the old TV universe. It didn't live up to its potential, nut I appreciated its attempts to flesh out that world ( as well as that decent crossover with that other recently deceased Cloak and Dagger show). May these kids find a new home in Dsney+

My list continues to dwindle as I continue to struggle to find anything I like in this realm of Peak TV. I think I'll just follow my last list minus Nancy Drew and add The Goldbergs P Valley, Harlots and Impulse to my binge list over the rest of the year. As for past shows, I'll take another look at Eli Stone and check out Better off Ted and Samantha Who along with past Goldberg episodes in the summer. I'll finish off GLOW and Bonding whenever the hell they finish up production.

CBS All Access to become Paramount+. Will also include Showtime internationally, but not in the US.

BTW, ignore the headline, The Godfather stuff is a lot less interesting than it sounds:

Makes sense, CBS isn't a brand name that has any recognition beyond the US.

That statement on cable could not be more true. Looking at how fewer new shows are starting up this season (even with Rona) compared to all the new content on streaming services is super telling. It just stinks because it feels both much easier and more exciting for me to watching something as a premiere on my TV than it is to: wait for my TV to connect to the internet -> loading an app -> searching for the show on my remote -> waiting for the show's loading, and doing that for like, seven different services I have to pay $10/month for (I'm already doing that for cable! Which I can't really get rid of because I live with my family who uses it more than I do).

Also am willing to admit that I get too overwhelmed by choices, and so scrolling and planning through a TV guide will always be easier for me lol.

Talked about this in the Venture Bros cancellation thread, but really got to wonder when Cartoon Network will show some new series. Those two above ended, OK KO got cancelled last September, Gumball the May before that, and Infinity Train looked to be the next big thing and that got moved to HBO Max. Only shows I can think of that are still ongoing are Teen Titans Go, Mao Mao, and Craig of the Creek. And even that last one has sort of had hints that it will be concluding soon.

Hope Mao Mao doesn't get cancelled like OK KO did, that show is GREAT.

....Man, OK KO ended too early....

Monday night's ratings in the new thread! 😄

ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" returned up by 0.3 compared to last year, with an average of 8.09 million total viewers (almost the same as last year):

I get the feeling OK KO was one of the first axes to fall from the ATT merger because that happened quickly after the merge was final.
