For me it's 2017 by a mile. 2007 had more influential games but things like Witcher, Uncharted, and Assassins Creed were only okay to me and got much better sequels in later years.

While 2017 was a great year, 2007 is on another level, Team Fortress 2, Rock Band, and Super Mario Galaxy are unrivaled for me.

2017 hands down, amazing year all around for nearly all platforms. The number of amazing games released is insane.

The comback of: Mario, Zelda, Nier, Gravity Rush, Persona, Sonic (Mania), Metroid and Resident Evil.

And some very good games Yakuza 0 and Kiwami, Nioh, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Pokemon soonish, Xenoblade 2 soonish, World War 2 COD, AC Origins, Splatoon 2 and way more.

It my favorite year in gamig ever tbh.
2007 was amazing but this year finally topped it. Next year might have a chance to even beat both if there are some suprises left still, Kingdom Hearts 3, God of War, Red Dead 2, Detroit, Nintendo titles, PC and way more.

2017 is definitely ahead to me. I liked and played several of those games from 2007, but this year is just on another level.

I think it's way to early to tell if games this year will be able to compare to the influence games like Bioshock, Assassins Creed and COD4 had and still have.

It's also hard not to think about how great some of the series started in 2007 were in the future (ME2 and U2 are amoungst my favourite games ever)

If we just look at major titles than I might have to give 2007 the edge. Bioshock, Portal, Call of Duty 4, and Mass Effect are hard to beat. These games defined the last generation. However, when you consider the breadth and variety of games in 2017... there's literally something for everyone this year. From Horizon to Persona to Hellblade to Pyre. It's on a whole other level.

2007 edges it out due to titles that have had more of a profound effect. Mass Effect, BioShock, Super Mario Galaxy, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Halo 3, Crysis, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Modern Warfare, The Darkness, No More Heroes, God of War 2, Heavenly Sword, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, The Witcher.

All good to great.

I mean... 2017 has been good, but c'mon.

Anyway, we all know what was, and very likely shall remain forever, the best year in gaming. 1998. When genre-changing title after genre-changing title was released.

For me, 2017 for sure. This is the best year of gaming I can remember.

What makes the difference is the incredible 1st quarter, which not a lot of years have. Just look at those games: Dragon Quest VIII, Yakuza 0, Nier Automata, Horizon, RE7, Zelda, and Persona 5 (close enough)

1998 is still the GOAT

But 2017 takes it compared to 2007 in my opinion. Seems nostalgia isn't always blinding.

I'd go with 2017, but as has already been touched on: 2007 really laid the foundations for an excellent decade of gaming.

2017 has been exceptional.

2017 by far. I never got the hype for 2007 unless you loved shooters. 2007 was a terrible time for Japanese home console games outside of Mario Galaxy.

It's been said, but 2007 was exciting for delivering fresh IP's that helped define the generation to come in its sophomore year(ironically most being unique experiences in the first-person perspective), while 2017 is preserving many of the industry's beloved franchises and properties through energized updates or taking them in bold new directions.

That said, neither year gave us Witcher 3, so both are garbage-tier.

For my personal tastes, 2017 destroys 2007. I can name 3 games at best from 2007 that I felt were great. It feels like the year was laden with shooters. I didn't care for games like Half-Life or Halo or BioShock. Meanwhile most of the 2017 list is fantastic for me. So much variety and everything feels different.

Wanted to bump since we're a year and a half later now and can look at both with less bias.

You forgot Hollow Knight. It was easier to miss when you first made this 2 years ago since it was just PC, but now that it was released on consoles last year it is rightfully recognized as one of the GOATs.

Well this is an old thread.
2017 was the year we got a new classic-style Sonic game. Even 2 years after it was a fantastic year for that reason alone.

Nier Automata is the game of the generation

2017 and it's not even close. All the 07 has is laying groundwork. In a games vs games situation 17 hands out a massacre.

2007 is like fourth or fifth for me in gaming years. The games were alright but that's all, they didn't feel amazing.

2007 has Halo 3, the best shooter ever made.

It was also a more transformational year for the industry and the medium. They are closely tied everywhere else.

2007 by far. 2017 was a good year with a couple of bangers, but 2007 is just another level entirely.

I would still say 2017 is the better year. 2007 will probably remain the more influential on the following decade though. I don't see many 3rd party developers embracing the robustness of systems of Breath of the Wild, and many of the other games were excellent iterations on ideas introduced in older releases.

2017 easily beats 2007 or any other year last gen. There's no contest here as far as I'm concerned, especially if you add in:

Darkwood
Ruiner
Hollow Knight
Rain World
Thumper
Nex Machina
Absolver
Divinity OS2
Echo
Elex
Observer

Wasn't just that

2007 had two genre defining shooters

Halo 3 and Modern warfare changed every shooter and both of their effects are still here today.

Mass effect changed story telling in a 3rd person action RPG forever.

Assassins creed started the Ubisoft formula.

It was a game defining year. So many of those games played influence to every single thing we touch today

I'll go with 2007, but 2017 will always be in discussions for legendary years. BTW OP, your 2017 list is incomplete without STALKER: SOC.

Thinking back on 2007, the only games released that year that I outright loved were Pokemon DP and Super Mario Galaxy. 2017 on the other hand had Super Mario Odyssey, Breath Of The Wild, Persona 5, Sonic Mania, and Pokemon USUM. And there are games I'm interested in but haven't played yet, like Nier Automata and Samus Returns.

I'd go on a limb and say 2017 was the best year of gaming since 2004. Those two and 1998 are the holy trinity.

EDIT: Forgot Ace Attorney 3 and Elite Beat Agents came out in 2007... still 2017, but 2007 had some GOATs for sure.

2007 was probably my favorite year in games out of any year honestly.

Mass Effect, COD 4, Halo 3, Bioshock, Super Mario Galaxy and God of War II are some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Mass Effect and Bioshock are both in my top 10 of all time alone.

I know it may be off topic, but how do you feel 2019 stacks up to 17 and 07?
Honestly, this year has been amazing with KH3, Resident Evil 2, DMC V, Sekiro and Death Stranding in November, I think this year could be really up there with the greats.

If Death stranding is as great as it could be, and pokemon and animal crossing are really great, it could end up being closer.

I like 2007 more and a lot of that has to do with the fact that I like its deep cuts a lot more. These include Ouendan 2, Ace Attorney 2&3, Blue Dragon, Lumines II, Beatmania IIDX 13: DistorteD, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, Eternal Sonata, Geometry Wars: Galaxies, and Super Stardust HD are all great IMO. Just comparing the heavy hitters 2017 is better, but of the more niche the only games that really stacks up for me is DanganRonpa V3, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and the 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI (which I played as an import so I'm counting it as a 2017 release). But I definitely prefer BotW/Odyssey/Persona 5/Nier Automata to like, Mario Galaxy/Halo 3/Bioshock/Portal.

Also, I think it's really interesting that Persona 5 would consistently make 2017 lists but Persona 3 rarely makes 2007 lists. I like Persona 5 better but if you're judging years by the quantity of worthwhile releases like I do it's still important. It sort of leads me to a theory I have, which is that a good number of people would probably have looked back on 2007 more fondly if they simply played different 2007 releases. Because the kinds of games with classic Japanese game design tropes that people missed in the late 2000s actually were getting released back then, but just frequently on platforms that weren't getting enough attention (DS/PSP, the PS2,sometimes the Wii).

2007 and it's not even a contest for me.
Even 2015 (Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Undertale, Life is Strange) was stronger imo, than 2017. Heck, even this year started really damn strong as well.

I suspect 2007 will end up being more influential in terms of the amount of innovative titles. But we're only 2 years removed from 2017, it's hard to really say.

Two mario games in 2007 vs. 1 in 2017.
2007 wins.

Life is simple, if you make it so.

2017 no contest. Galaxy aside 2007 was a year of mostly overrated mediocrity.

let me repost

2007 has STALKER, Crysis, Half Life, Team Fortress and ARMA.
2007 has World in Conflict, Tiberium Wars, Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance, Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts.
It has Witcher and Mask of the Betrayer.

Supreme Commander, ARMA, STALKER, Crysis, Mask of the Betrayer - these are best in class
