Vanilla vares previous games had AWESOME gameplay, Dragons crown is among my GOAT's with 500+ hours clocked. Thats what makes me sad my favorit developer spent so many years on this, even if its another master piece, the audience itself for such a game just is not there. Im just not interested in it, will throw some more money on their previous games to support the developer please survive or port your old games to switch as well

I'm 16 hours in and the English has been fantastic.
There's nothing lost in the english dub at all whatsoever.

play it with whatever track you like, but both VAs are fantastic.

Dude has been on a crusade against dubs, specifically this game's dub, for a while now.

Anyone else feel like Japanese audio/dialog is pretty much always superior to an English dub whenever given the option in a Japanese-developed game?

I've felt this way for a long time, and I don't think my opinion has changed at all even in recent years. To me, whenever a Japanese-developed game offers dual audio with the option to choose either original Japanese spoken dialog or an English language track it's always 100% clear-cut that the...

The dub (and original audio) for this game are both good. Let people pick the one they want without making one sound worse than the other.

I was on this hype train for about 60% of the game.

By the end, I settled on "pretty good".
There's a point in the progression where the player is able to mostly figure everything out, after which there is a metric ton of red herring mysteries that don't lead anywhere new. That cheapened the overall experience for me.

I liked it a lot, but not enough to be my GOTY. I think it's #6 in my ranking so far this year.

That being said, it's absolutely worth a play, and was well worth the 60ish hours I put into it. I don't regret picking it up at all, and it is definitely one of the better games I have played this year

How actually is the combat? Everything looked great but seeing the combat clips in the trailer was just awful looking. I am very interested in picking it up and finishing it before i play cyberpunk nonstop.

Easily a top 5 game this year

Zularti i had a blast with the combat in this honestly, there's lots to upgrade and it feels really satisfying to take out a big enemy.

Until I played the game this year, I thought I had finally gotten fatigued of gaming. But this game revitalized my wonder with the medium. So yes, my GOTY by far (though admittedly the only other 2020 games I've played are some indies and TLOU2).

On the other hand, people should temper their expectations a bit. There are a lot of things to nitpick with the game and some of the plotlines are not as well executed. But to me that is missing the forest for the trees. When you do such an innovative and experimental presentation like this game, it is almost a miracle that the game came out as well as this did. If you play the game, take some time to appreciate the experimental structure and storytelling, and don't expect every little detail to have all their edges polished off. This is also a bit of a consequence of the game's turbulent development.

Yup, copped this as soon as I saw BB putting it up on sale for $30. They sold out quickly.

I ordered my copy last night, the PS4 and consoles that are hooked up to a tv are an absolutely terrible fit for visual novel games imo, and there seems to be questionable content in this game to say the least, but I've been interested in trying it out.

Someone in this thread asked which was better, so I gave my emphatic opinion on the matter.

If someone prefers the dub I'm not going to shout them down about it. I realize that this preference is mostly subjective. But if someone new to the game asks which language to start with, I'm going to vehemently recommend subbed for 13 Sentinels every time.

I don't mean to diminish the quality of the English dub on its own merits. I just think it's not as good as the original Japanese for this game.

I saw this got a game awards nomination for best story. I hadn't heard of it until then so I put it on my list of games to eventually check out.

The script on this game must have gone through hundreds of iterations. Each piecemeal section has its own twists and turns which make sense and feel earned in the moment, but actually make sense in the general overall narrative at the same time. It's quite astounding.

I just started playing it yesterday. 1 hour in, I have to say the production values seem amazing so far! The menus are slick, the visuals are beautiful, such a great art style. I'm very intrigued by the story so far, but not sure how I feel about the combat. Definitely gonna keep playing it though, it seems to be great.

I'd have no issues at all if this took GOTY, its an incredible experience and the only one of its kind.

I see this game recommended a lot but I have a questions about what I'm reading in here before I add it to my radar of games to eventually pick up.

These jiggly boobs, up skirt panty shots of high school girls or any of the other pervy stuff. How often is this thrown in front of you?

If it's like out in front of your face all the time then it kills any potential purchase from me.

I don't like anime so I'm not used to it and I feel like I've seen a pretty heavy amount within the 3 hours I played that I've felt embarrased playing the game infront of my wife. Especially with them naked in the robots

It really isn't that bad with this stuff. There's just one adult character that's just as silly looking as a character from Dragon's Crown. This is as bad as it gets with her:

After playing the game for so long I don't really even register that they are naked in the robots. It's just cool looking character art. I mean shit like Tenchi Muyo is more racy than this game. The artwork never gets worse than what is depicted on this tshirt: https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/NEOGDS-398915

The combat didn't really seem like my thing but I'd been meaning to give it a shot all the same as it seems to be pretty well respected — so i just got a copy now myself.

It can join the other vanilla ware games I've bought and been dying to play but for whatever dumb reason never make time for. Hopefully the game ends up doing well for them and we get to see a console version of Muramasa

I feel like you have to constantly look at the log and mystery archive to understand what the fuck is going on since all the characters look the exact same, when they're not naked that it's

I really don't understand this criticism. The only time you really see them in the cockpit is basically the battle sequences -- it HARDLY happens during adventure mode.

And yes, you have to work at understanding this game and that can entail re-watching earlier scenes and/or reading the mystery archives. I can see it being a criticism for some but it's a big highlight for others.

I should maybe try to get back into this. I bounced off after the first hour or so because the gameplay is kind of... not very engaging. Combat is extremely basic, with limited options and little to no sense of what the mechs and kaiju actually look like when they're fighting. The visual novel segments aren't much better, but I have more hope that these will be more compelling later once the story picks up. At the front of the game watching characters passively interact in dusky classroom settings just isn't very interesting.

Also, I rolled my eyes pretty hard when the teenage girl character is literally asking "what happened to my clothes?" in the first 30 seconds of the game. Terrible first impression.

I like the sub, although I wish they Americanized the dialogue and dropped the titles and maybe used english names. It's real awkward hearing them say senpai and san lol

just beat this last night and—hoo boy... I thought this would be in the camp of Nier Automata in my brain of "hyped to a fault" (still enjoyed it), but even with all the praise piled on, it STILL exceeded all of my expectations.

A random thought I had was: "ugh, I caaant believe they're making me go back to the 11 out of 10 combat part again. I want to get back to the visual novel!" It made me realize I was complaining about having to eat dessert before I could eat dessert lol

Still in the shrink-wrap for me. I want to beat demons souls before I start this but I'm really excited. I know zero about this game other than it's Vanillaware

you'd think 13 sentinels is straight up porn reading some posts lol. Danganronpa was wayyyyyyyyy worse and I saw less criticism about that.

It's alright for such an anime VN but some of the character designs and sexualization with poor justification is embarrassing.

Now if you're like me you will spend the next week going through the Event Viewer and Mystery Files to help make more sense of some of the story's more obtuse details. And here's the good news... it somehow manages to all fit together! Replaying certain scenes in the game in chronological order with newfound understanding/context is really rewarding.

Nothing is really "in your face", the characters are still sprites after all. There are some anime trope situations and characters, like a girl falling on it's butt while wearing a school uniform and getting embarrassed, or entering the room to help when a character screams for help while changing. But these are few and far between. The sexy character is a more constant presence, but I don't think she's "in your face" more than, let's say, the sprite Mai Shiranui is.

Damn straight. GOTY! This game is a masterpiece of design and storytelling. Gorgeous visuals and tight sound design as well. Easily the best PS4 game this year (Well, Ghost of Tsushima is also fantastic).
