This was the first Pokemon game I played (Black). I remember really liking it. It made me get Platinum after beating it because I wanted a Pikachu, lol.

Great set of new mons, but level design-wise it was the beginning of the downfall. Games were linear as shit. Of course, they look like diamonds compared to everything that came after though

BW2 has great gameplay and a much better region but the main campaign puts me to sleep lol, if we could have BW in the BW2 region it'd be amazing

I like BW2's campaign more than you do, but I don't disagree with the rest! If the sequels had a story as good as the first ones... WHEW.

Bests gen out of them all imo. The prerelease is so vivid to me too, I remember where I was when all the new mons were leaked

These were great. Along with their sequels, are two of the best games in the series to date. Nothing pushed story more, they had fluid 60fps battles, and focused completely on new Pokemon for the length of the campaign.

I find it hilarious how far apart our views are regarding storytelling in this franchise. You loath my favorite arc in the anime and you're nonplussed by my favorite story in a game!

They both have something in common in that regard. Taking the concept of cute battle pets and trying to tell a story about ethics around said premise, which is a bigger ludonarrative dissonance to me than all the people Nathan Drake shoots in an Uncharted. Its already hard to take seriously that everyone and their family take part in pitting living weapons against each other for money so when the evil team is essentially PETA you lost me entirely lol. BW story almost exists to try and justify the nonsensical premise.

We have been shoving creatures into PC boxes, stealing them away from their families, throwing them into fights just to tank hits, making them get poisoned and burned etc and now they wanna talk about how its fine because they battle in nature too! ok Natural Gropius or whatever your name was.

These games along with SoulSilver are what got me back into the series after taking a multi year hiatus during gen IV.

Loved how it was a semi reboot where every Pokémon was new. It made it tons of fun to explore since I literally had no idea what would be around the corner, just like how it was playing gen I for the first time.

It also helped that these games had the strongest story of the series thus far, which made it even more interesting.

Absolutely love these games and I hope one day we can get Pokémon games like this again. I will say though, Legends Arceus has me excited in a very similar way and I can't wait for that.

This was the generation that brought me back.

It was also the last 2D mainline Pokemon. RIP. The animated versions B2W2 are amazing to this day.

I kind of took it as a bad omen that alot of old Pokemon for Gen 5 were just old Gen 4 sprites that were tweaked for animation. Some looked good but some looked really bad imo.

Haha, that's fair. I appreciate the insight into where you're coming from on this. The dissonance is real. It doesn't bother me, but if it did, I might well have the same opinion.

Best gen. I would say it has the worst pokemon design overall but still everything else is so great about it. The seasons were cool, it had a nice story, nice music, probably the hardest pokemon games.

The gen that brought me back after gen 3 bored me and gen 4 did nothing to entice me.

Loved 5 so much. Felt like such a fresh coat of paint. New Pokémon only was great. Soundtrack was super memorable and catchy.

The best generation for sure, and even had an excellent sequel.

Excellent games, and the peak of the franchise for me. Such a great diversity of new Pokemon, as opposed to previous gens when it felt like most people had the same 4 mainstay mons in their party. Gameplay was fluid and the story in B/W1 was, while not amazing in its own right, a good step up from previous generations. B/W and its sequels are still not surpassed.

Second least favorite gen, just ahead of R/S. Played 150 hours of Soul Silver the year before and was hyped for more Pokemon but nothing about it felt very compelling.

First Pokemon I played after third gen. Needless to say, it is one of my favorites. Loved the story, the characters, how Gym Leaders actually had relevance in the plot, the music and Unova. The seasons mechanic was also neat.

I still remember getting chills when the gym leaders showed up towards the end of the game to help you fend off Team Plasma's sages.

Still the best Pokemon games to this day. I wish we would get another gen with all new Pokemon.

The game that made me happy about Pokemon again after the disappointment from Diamond.

Still the best Pokemon games to this day. I wish we would get another gen with all new Pokemon.
Yes. Generation 10 sounds like the best time to make that happen. Every five generations we get a "refresh."

+1 that 5th gen is the best gen. The gameplay, atmosphere, and presentation were all great. And these all came together in a way to give the gen one of the strongest identities in the series.

Qualitatively the best generation. Even Black 2 and White 2 weren't easy cashgrabs. I enjoy Gen 3 the most due to the vibes/nostalgia but these are less flawed games.

Best generation since the second one. Shame they threw everything overboard to just start anew with X/Y. And they were the worse for it.

Also: best bug type design in the series:

Scolipede is so good!

Also, Joltik is adorable!

Played Black at launch and was pretty disappointed with it.

Me too. I appreciated that caves were more streamlined and no zubats. However, the game felt incredibly linear and the over the top ambitious story was cringeworthy. The mainstory was short, and I didn't care much for the characters. I know the sequel was much better, but never got to play it.

Agreed, I also wasn't a fan of the pokemon designs.

This was the first generation that felt like a real evolution of the series, a proper "Pokémon 2.0". I wasn't a fan of all of the new Pokémon themselves but having a completely new set of them for most of the game brought back a kind of thrill and originality that was missing since the first games and I doubt we'll ever see again. It was also the first one to bring in new characters that actually felt like friends/rivals to you since gen 1 or 2, and the first to have a story that actually resembled something decent.

X and Y were a huge step back in just about every way outside of the multiplayer. I think Sun and Moon were a big step towards capturing the novelty and fresh feeling of gen 5 again, but it didn't quite get there and was too linear.

For me Black and White is Peak Pokemon.

-Best Story ever in a Pokemon Game
-Great Starters and many of my favorite Pokemons like Zoroark or Krookodile
-the Courage to make a soft reboot (unfortunately this let to a outcry of the Fans and since then we have Gen. 1 Pandering and only few new Pokemon each Generation)
-by far the best follow up ever with Black 2 and White 2, wich wasn't the same Game Director's Cut Edition but a real sequel.

Probably my favorite Pokemon game, and the only one that managed to capture some of the same magic as the original GB release. Main downsides for me are that Unova is pretty forgettable, and the legendaries are kind of lame.

Gen 1 and 2 cannot be beat due to nostalgia, but Black/White are very good Pokemon games.

Shame that subsequent generations dropped the ball hard on single-player.
