I'm not even gonna lie, looking through stupid MAGA cult idiots on Twitter and everything that has been happening for so long and I had to choke back tears. I can't help but feel we're shooting to make our country irrelevant. We are the dumbest fucking nation. I'm pretty much out of hope.

So Democrats are a threat to Americans because they are blocking a bill during this "serious crisis" but it's perfectly fine to go back to work? What?

Willing to risk lives in the hopes that the economy will give him a second term. What a fucking savage.
Doesn't he realize that economy can crash on a dime, but it can't recover on one. People are not going to be in a spending mood even if this shit ends next month

The biggest expense when this is all over is gonna be the funeral costs for burying loved ones. No joke, those fancy wooden coffins and gravestones aren't cheap...

This idiot. Florida really is going to become Italy 2.0. How many people have to die for trump to get it through his thick skull that this isn't going away after 15 days. Florida is gods waiting room, and he's about to be packed :(

This doesn't make any sense. Experts are saying this is going to take 2 months and even that's very generous. The fact that he says weeks is fucking stupid

Schools being closed is going to put people out of work if businesses can reopen without taking parents into consideration.

To be fair- Thousands die with each 1% increase in unemployment.

There is no great answer here. The longer the economy basically shuts down the more damage it does to people.

No, not comparable magnitudes at all. Without social distancing we are talking a few million deaths. People will finally understand in 1 week when every day thousands die and in 2 weeks when 10s of thousands die.

There is a better answer to all of this. It's the federal government aiding the working class, the people who will be most affected by all of this. Temporary UBI, freezing mortgages and rent.
Almost like the government should put systems in place to stop that, not just send people to die.
sending people to die at the expense of profit is capitalism at work

The only way to come out of this with both the economy and the people mostly ok is to enact socialist policies, but Trump and the GOP *do not* want to do that, because they know once they do that there's no going back from it.

Trump missed his chance to have any effect on protecting the economy. Now it's out of his hands. States are locking down. People are staying at home with or without this approval.

The thing is, it's not even going to help the economy! The free market goons are deluding themselves into getting a bunch of helpless people killed. And it's far beyond the mental capacity of 45 to understand anything more complex than "chart up good, chart down bad"

- Most Governors will hopefully not risk the deaths on their hands, should they open before health officials recommend.
- His idea that we now know better and will distance/wash our hands assumes the US has reasonable health literacy which is not true (e.g. see anti-vaccine groups).
- Trump and his team could have just prefaced by saying testing is going to be so widespread, before re-opening, that we will be able to isolate cases better, but he could not even convey that message as it wasn't written out for him.

Trump: "Our country wasn't built to be shutdown. This was not a country that was built for this. It was not built to be shutdown."

Maybe, just maybe, that's exactly what's wrong with how it was built?

Tbf the only way to build a country 'to be shut down' would be to build in extremely dictatorial powers at the start, which is kinda not the US's deal!

But also: could this be his Katrina???! I dunno Jan, YES?

People keep comparing Trump to Nero. But not even Nero told Romans not to worry about the fire and get back to work.

We're about to find out the consequence of having elected a narcissistic sociopath. The cruelty and inhumanity wasn't always going to be directed, primarily, at poor brown people
Not only will he seriously try to do this, I imagine he will go on the offensive to every country that tries to isolate itself from the US' fuckery with sanctions, twitter posts, and threats.

The world will might actually call America as a nation a source of disease. For people living here, they already know that's true.
Oh, lord. This is what's going to happen, isn't it?

Socialist policies would make it easier for them to clamp down on people since it would be the government that ran the programs.

The "great answer" here is a better social safety net. But if we reject 2+2=4, yeah, there are no good choices.

The obvious issue with opening the floodgates, though, is that it's not going to be acceptable to keep the country open as hundreds of thousands or millions are dying in over-capacity hospitals, and the medical system completely collapses. So yeah, you can turn up the economy for a month, but then you're more fucked than ever economically, and you got a horrendous number of people killed for your few weeks of stock market rally.

If his voterbase in the swing state of Florida starts dying off because of overcrowded hospitals will he change his mind?

It feels like we're in that scene in Chernobyl where the leadership is having that meeting after the explosion and they're are all just minimizing. We need a hero like Valery Legasov to speak up and say "No!".

Given his fawning over dictators, he certainly wishes he had such powers. That said, with people having no choice but to always be working because there are no safety nets and most of the country is one missed paycheck away from disaster, of course the US was never built to be shut down.

Cali shutdown means huge % of usa economy also down

Not just that but any metro metro area is going to ignore it, even in red states. Austin, Houston, Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta, etc. Basically 90% of the US economy. His tantrum does nothing other that expose now weak he is. Then good luck making any progress in the other 10% with the supply chain all fucked up.

Oh, lord. This is what's going to happen, isn't it?

I mean, why wouldn't it? He has to impose his own reality onto the world, and what happens when the rest of the world takes a problem seriously, and he, by running the US, goes in the other way?

I was already concerned that if the virus doesn't go away due to temperature changes in summer, America is uniquely ill-equipped in that it may be stuck with the virus until a vaccine came out. We're talking minority communities, homeless populations, and prisons systems effectively having it permanently. I did not think we'd begin to entertain it just being...a thing in the country everyone will have to deal with until a vaccine happens. I guess like school shootings, this is a form of misery we'll just have to take as every day American living. And as with shootings and the way misery in America is made, it's manufactured. Of course, this virus is global, it doesn't adhere to borders. Other countries will see America as an infection zone and isolate themselves, even if they were to mitigate the spread. Trump would be furious about this because this too impacts the economy and LOLJOBS, and would likely punish every other country trying to do the right thing. It would be an attempt to force the world into saying it's okay to do what he wants because he will target those who object, as he always does.

What we effectively have, right now, is a man openly and brazingly say he's okay with committing crimes against humanity against the population he represents. What international force, if any, can stop him? It's not happening on the inside; I'm sure Republicans love this garbage. Pro-life and pro-virus.
