I recently purchased the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch, mostly for the novelty, but it did make me think about just how many ways I had to play Super Mario Bros. in some form or another without having to leave my living room:
  • The original cartridge on NES
  • The NES mini version
  • The Nintendo Switch Online NES version
  • The Nintendo Switch Online Super Mario Bros. All Stars SNES version
  • The Wii Super Mario Bros. All Stars SNES Version
  • Super Mario Bros. 35 (only kind of counts)
  • Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Game & Watch
Without having to look into my old consoles to see if I purchased it on Virtual Console at some point, that's still a lot of legit versions of the same game. I think it may be the one game I have the easiest, most plentiful access to, and certainly the game I've bought the most times in some form or another, even if a lot of them were mostly unintentional.

So how many ways do you have in your own gaming area to play Super Mario Bros., or do you have a game that's even more omnipresent in your collection? Without thinking too hard, I know I have at least 4 ways to play Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and heck at least 4 ways to play Ocarina of Time now that I think about it.

I technically still have my NES, but I doubt it works at this point. It was frequently giving me the flashing white screen of death the last time I ever had it plugged in decades ago. Also have the NES Classic version.

Off the top of my head...

Wii VC (though I'd need to double check if it's still there)
3DS Ambassador Version
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe GBC Cart
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe 3DS VC
NSO Original
NSO All-Stars
NES Classic Mini
A Famicom cart I got 'cos it looks cool
Anniversary Game & Watch (getting it at Christmas but still)

Also the Super Luigi romhack in NES Remix 2 might as well count if Super Mario 35 does. Animal Crossing GameCube as well considering I have an Action Replay.

So in total... 10 or 12.

And even saying that I wouldn't be surprised if I own more copies of Sonic 1 and 2.

I have Sonic 1 and 2 via...
Original Carts
Sonic Jam PAL (Saturn)
Sonic Jam JP (Saturn)
Sonic Mega Collection (GameCube)
The Mega Drive Collection for PSP
The Mega Drive Collection for PS4
The Mega Drive Collection for Switch (this one I didn't buy at least)
Steam
Sega Ages Switch
Mega Drive Mini
Sonic Generations (just Sonic 1) and Android (just Sonic 2)

So yeah at least 11, almost certainly more since I'm fairly certain I got both via Wii VC.

We also don't count the Game Gear versions since they're basically different games

As an aside I didn't even complete SMB till earlier this year via the All Stars release

Since I had the nes cartridge I never bothered to buy it again. I have the deluxe version on the 3ds as it was a freeby and the two versions from the switch online, so that makes 4. Unless you want to count the smash demos too :p

I totally forgot about the NES Remix 2 Luigi version! Count that one as well.

I guess 4, but if you count SNES All Stars and the GBA version that is a couple more.

I'm curious. The Action Replay lets you play SMB in Animal Crossing?

There are a bunch of NES games in it. Some were made available through e-reader cards while others needed an Action Replay or Gameshark to access.

Both it and The Legend of Zelda are on the disc but inaccessible without an Action Replay (and maybe one of the hacky Nook Codes?) I THINK SMB was distributed via an event in Japan but Zelda never got the chance.

1 thanks to Nintendo Online.

Never had an NES or SNES, so I never became a big fan of 2D Mario.

Got the NES cartridge and played it to death when I was five years old and I sold it for booze when I was in my early 30s. I feel good about my decisions.

I definitely know who Mario is, but my answer is still zero. I played the game a bunch as a kid, but I've never really cared to go back to it since.

Exactly 9. The NES cart, the All Stars cart, The Deluxe GBC cart, it was one of the first Wii VC games I bought, I got it for free on 3DS VC for being an ambassador, I got Deluxe for free on 3DS VC through a Club Nintendo promotion, have it and the All Stars version through that Switch Online shit, I have an NES Classic, and just picked up the 35th Anniversary Game & Watch last week,

Despite the way more cramped viewing area, SMB Deluxe is my preferred version of the game by far.

NES cart
SNES cart for SMAS
Wii release of SMAS
Switch VC version of SMB
Switch VC version of SMAS
NES mini
3DS Ambassador game

There are probably one or two I'm forgetting, honestly.

It's been a collecting goal of mine to get a CIB version of every official release. I'm a long ways off from that but I have CIB versions of the Famicom, FDS, and NES games, plus the G&W anniversary edition. Also have loose/digital versions on SNES, GBC, Wii VC, Switch NSO x2 and NES mini. Plus SMB35.

Despite the way more cramped viewing area, SMB Deluxe is my preferred version of the game by far.

It would be swell if they released a version of this game with the normal field of view. Hard to believe they've never done so.

Uhhhhhhhhh

SMAS
SMAS + SMW
SMB DX for GBC
SMB NES Classics GBA
the Wii/Wii U VC version
the Wii SMAS collection
3DS version
NES mini
Famicom mini
Switch online SMB and SMAS
the SMB Game and Watch

I'm honestly surprised no one in the homebrew community's attempted to whip something similar up, either. It'd easily be the definitive version of the game with a normal viewing area.

Thanks Rotobit for the reminder of those official romhacks. I forgot all about Super Luigi Bros. (NES Remix 2) and Speed Mario Bros. (Ultimate NES Remix).

NES original with Duck Hunt
SNES All Stars
GBC Deluxe
NES Classic Mini
Switch online
And I did own the Wii All-Stars at some point.

That's a lot of copies of a game I don't really have any fondness or nostalgia towards.

Available to play at a moment's notice: 8
Super Mario (NES Classic)
Super Mario 2 (NES Classic)
Super Mario 3 (NES Classic)
Super Mario World (SNES Classic)
Mario Kart (SNES Classic)
Mario RPG (SNES Classic)
Mario Kart 8 (Switch)
New Super Mario Bros U (Switch)

More than that in storage though like actual NES copies of all the Super Mario games and a copy of Mario Sunshine.

Edit: crap... 9. I forgot the NES Classic has Dr. Mario.
The games where he's not the star don't count right? Like Punch Out or Donkey Kong? Right?

He just means SMB1.

Off the top of my head:

Switch (NES Online app)
Switch again (the All-Stars version in the SNES Online app)
Switch third time's the charm (Vs. Super Mario Bros.)
NES Classic
Wii U (I don't know if it's currently installed or if I ever even upgraded, but at the very least I know I had it on Wii VC so I could access it easily enough)
3DS Virtual Console
I have the cart of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and a Game Boy Color.

So I guess seven that I can think of.

Edit: 9, depending on how you count the NES Remix games. Yeesh.

Well lets see:

1) Super Mario Bros. (NES SMB/Tetris/Nintendo World Cup triple cartridge)
2) Super Mario Bros. (Wii U VC)
3) Super Mario Bros. (3DS Ambassador)
4) Super Mario Bros. (NES Classic)
5) Super Mario Bros. (Switch Online)
6) Super Mario Bros. (Game and Watch 2020)
7) Super Mario Bros Deluxe (3DS VC)
8) Super Mario All-Stars (Switch Online)

Not sure if I want to count them:

9) Super Mario 35
10) Arcade Archives Vs. Super Mario Bros.

I think that's it lol.

I own it through a SMAS cartridge for SNES, Wii VC, Wii U VC, 3DS VC, and Switch Online (of which its version I've played through, both the NES and SNES version, but I'll count that as 5). It's OK, but I think its outdone by SMB3 and SMW. I would kill for a re-release with all of the SMBDX features, just without the terrible GB resolution.

For sure:

1) Super Mario Bros & Duck Hunt (NES)
2) Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World (SNES)
3) Super Mario Bros (3DS Ambassador)
4) Super Mario Bros (NES Classic)

I may also have Super Mario Collection (SMAS name for SFC), but I don't remember for sure.

I only have one version that was purchased while the rest were basically free.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for Game Boy Color
3DS Ambassador version
NSO NES and Famicom (because I made a JP account)
Super Mario All-Stars from NSO SNES and Super Famicom

I'd count that as 4. I've apparently picked up a few extras indeed.

I thought I was in the 5-8 category, but after thinking about it I'm pretty sure I have over 10 copies/versions.

Currently, I think just the NSO ver. on Switch, 3DS Ambassador, and NES mini, although over the years there have been many more. But I just picked 2-4 in the poll since that's what is accurate for me right now.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the GBC
Super Mario All-Stars for SNES
Super Mario Bros and Super Mario All-stars for Switch online

I technically have it in some emulators but eh....

  • Deluxe via 3DS VC
  • VS. Super Mario Bros. on Switch
  • Game & Watch

Let's see -
SNES All-Stars cart
SMB Deluxe on GBC
Famicom Mini on GBA
Wii VC
SMB All-Stars for Wii
WiiU VC
3DS VC
NES Classic
Switch VC (NES/SNES)
Game and Watch

I might even have it unlocked in Animal Crossing on GameCube, can't remember.

So, a few ways. Now, actually wired up and play right this second? Switch, WiiU and G&W.
